These are fixed term posts, initially for 12 months, with possible extension. Applicants should have full GMC registration and have completed 2 years of training in acute medical specialties (of which at least 12 months should be anaesthesia) post Foundation training to be able to work on the senior airway rota on Intensive Care.
Overview
The posts are ideally suited to those who wish to gain further experience in the management of critically unwell patients with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. Those seeking further clinical exposure and portfolio-boosting opportunities in preparation for specialty training are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the 1 in 8 airway rota across QMC and NCH campus critical care units.
- Perform daily reviews of ICU patients and present findings on the MDT ward round, focusing on the major trauma patient population within adult critical care.
- In conjunction with consultant support, lead clinical decision making for junior medical and nursing staff as the senior member of the critical care team.
- Review critically unwell patients outside of critical care.
- Admit, stabilise, and formulate an initial management plan for critically unwell adults.
- Competently initiate ventilation, use vasopressors, insert central venous catheters and arterial lines, and transfer critically unwell patients.
- Support the learning and development of other members of the critical care team, including undergraduates.
- Participate in clinical governance and quality improvement activities.
- Set individual goals.
Other responsibilities
- Supervisor by dedicated consultants within both Critical Care.
- Engage in educational meetings (journal clubs, ITU rounds, morbidity meetings) and protected teaching days.
- Optional teaching days covering generic non-clinical topics such as ethics, medical law, professionalism, and interview skills.
- Participate in research and audit programmes in collaboration with the Academic Departments of Anaesthesia and Surgery.
Qualifications
- Full GMC registration.
- Completed 2 years of training in acute medical specialties with at least 12 months in anaesthesia post Foundation training.
- Strong clinical skills in critical care management, including airway management, ventilation, vasopressor support, central venous and arterial line insertion.
