An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) apprentice supports experienced engineers with the commissioning, maintenance, and repair of UPS systems and associated battery equipment, while completing a structured technical training programme. The role involves accompanying field service engineers to customer sites, assisting with preventative maintenance visits, fault finding and rectification, and the installation and testing of new UPS systems, ensuring mission‑critical power remains available for customer equipment. Under supervision, the apprentice learns to produce accurate job documentation, maintain tools and test equipment, and follow all health and safety and quality procedures, gradually developing the skills and knowledge required to progress into a fully qualified UPS service engineer or customer service engineer at the end of the apprenticeship.
This apprenticeship will allow you to work alongside UPS Engineers assisting in service activities, whilst completing a qualification to become a qualified UPS Field Service Engineer. This will enhance your understanding of the need for secure power and critical data centre infrastructure, benefitting from hands‑on experience in the workplace combined with innovative academic learning.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Undertake and complete successfully the Vertiv training programme.
- Undertake a range of tasks suited to the current level of training and development.
- Keep and update training records as required within the apprenticeship framework to achieve training targets.
- Assist UPS Field Service/Battery Engineers/Technicians in providing commissioning, maintenance, repair of UPS equipment supplied or maintained by Vertiv.
- Fault‑finding and rectification.
- Carry out contract maintenance and inspection on a planned basis to required standards.
- Identify opportunities for extra works and preventative recommendations.
- Perform remedial work for contract customers, either as planned work or as a call‑out facility.
- Complete and submit relevant reports to service administration within a timely manner following all site activity.
- Gain experience of UK service business, back‑office processes and how supporting systems operate.
- Adhere to the company HSE policy and keep up to date with company safety training.
- Achieve successful completion of relevant apprenticeship qualification to become a qualified engineer.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

- Qualifications: Four GCSEs at A-C or equivalent, with two in Maths and English.
- Duration: 4 years.
- Must have a full clean UK driving licence.
- Strong focus on customer satisfaction and long‑term customer relation building and retention.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
