Are you an experienced Electrical Craftsperson looking to develop your career working for the NHS? If so, Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust may have the perfect option for you. Our Estates team is looking to recruit a highly motivated and flexible Electrical Craftsperson to join our Estates Team at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital. Duties will include carrying out preventive and reactive maintenance on a wide range of building services and equipment. The ability to take part in the on‑call rota and work overtime is essential. You will need to live within a 15‑mile radius of the site.

Our maintenance team (electrical, mechanical and building trades) is responsible for the Trust’s properties and equipment. The department is customer focused, aiming to provide a high‑quality service at all times with teamwork, respect and integrity as core values.

Three key requirements:

  • Time served as an electrician (or equivalent experience)
  • Appropriate qualification in a relevant electrical discipline
  • Thorough experience in maintenance or service industries

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and responsive maintenance service to all of the Trust’s properties.

To diagnose and repair faults and maintain, by application of craft skills, the building engineering services, plant and equipment.

Job responsibilities

  • Identify, diagnose and rectify faults; carry out repairs and planned maintenance of electrical services, plant and equipment, including steam‑raising plant, HVAC, heating, water and drainage systems, macerators, catering equipment, hydrotherapy pool and ward equipment.
  • Carry out reactive and complex planned maintenance of building engineering services in accordance with core skills.
  • Complete mandatory training as required.
  • Carry out installations, commissioning and testing of new work; assist team members when other skills are involved.
  • Liaise with clinical staff to arrange shutdowns and maintenance of equipment and plant.
  • Work safely on Low Voltage (LV) and generated electrical systems in accordance with statutory regulations and health and safety legislation; act as Competent Person (LV) for Trust properties.
  • Conduct periodic checking, servicing and testing of plant and equipment as per planned maintenance programmes.
  • Work at height, use access equipment, lift and handle heavy objects, and work in enclosed spaces such as roof voids and service ducts.
  • Supervise Maintenance Assistants on a day‑to‑day basis.
  • Familiarise, train or instruct others as appropriate.
  • Comply with HSE procedures, regulations and the Trust’s health and safety policy.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Maintain all required paperwork systems for the department’s operations.
  • Undertake training where necessary to improve skills, learn new techniques or ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in the on‑call arrangements providing 24‑hour cover to the hospital.
  • Adhere to the Estates Department code of dress, wearing the supplied uniform at all times.
  • Work in accordance with all relevant Trust policies and procedures.
  • Immediately notify the Maintenance Team Leader or appropriate line manager of any unsafe practice or statutory contravention.

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3, C&G or equivalent in a relevant electrical discipline.
  • Recognised electrical apprenticeship.
  • Knowledge of the 17th or 18th Edition Requirement for Electrical Installations.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Good awareness of health and safety legislation and experience of working to safe systems.
  • Knowledge of fire alarm systems and standby generators.
  • In‑depth working knowledge of building services engineering.

Experience

  • Proven experience in a service and/or maintenance role.
  • Experience of working within a team.
  • Experience of lone working.
  • Experience in the maintenance of healthcare building services and equipment.
  • Experience of on‑call working.
