Join us as a Backend Engineer and help build the powerful services that drive brilliant customer and internal experiences.

You will design and deliver secure, scalable, high performance APIs in close collaboration with Product, Frontend and Engineering leadership. From shaping technical direction to owning implementation and operational excellence, you will play a key role in building reliable, future proof systems.

You will champion code quality, service health and continuous improvement, strengthening engineering discipline while keeping delivery pragmatic and impactful. If you love solving complex problems, shaping platform strategy and making a real difference at scale, this is the role for you.

Here’s a taste of what you will be doing as a Backend Developer at Nottingham Building Society:

  • Build Backend Services: Develop microservices using Node (primary) and Python.
  • Create Quality APIs: Deliver well‑structured APIs and integrations with internal and external systems.
  • Write Great Code: Produce clean, testable, maintainable code that meets engineering standards.
  • Shape Solutions: Contribute to technical design discussions and architecture decisions.
  • Ensure Reliability: Build secure, resilient and high‑performance services.
  • Support Production: Investigate and resolve incidents, ensuring stable service operations.
  • Improve Engineering Practice: Participate in code reviews and drive continuous improvement.
  • Enable Smooth Delivery: Work within CI/CD pipelines and contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing.

About you:

  • Strong Engineering Foundations: Solid understanding of backend fundamentals, API design, data modelling and system integration.
  • Cloud and DevOps Savvy: Familiar with cloud architectures, modern deployment practices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Quality and Reliability Mindset: Aware of security, performance and resilience considerations across services.
  • Problem Solver: Confident troubleshooting issues across code, infrastructure and third‑party integrations.
  • Effective Communicator: Able to clearly explain technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical colleagues.
  • Commercial Experience: Proven background building and maintaining backend services, RESTful APIs and asynchronous systems.
  • Operationally Mature: Experienced supporting live services, resolving production issues and working in regulated or risk‑aware environments.
  • Growth and Team Focused: Pragmatic, collaborative, open to feedback and quick to learn, with a calm, methodical approach under pressure.
