Head of Research And Development

We are currently looking for a Head of R&D to join a leading Biotechnology company based in the UK. This exciting opportunity is ideal for a strategic, hands‑on leader with a passion for translating scientific research into real‑world applications. The role offers the chance to influence product development and technological breakthroughs within a dynamic, fast‑paced environment.

As the Head of R&D, you will be a key member of the leadership team, working closely with senior stakeholders to drive complex technical projects from concept through to delivery, supporting the company’s mission to harness advanced chemistry for a cleaner and greener future.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead and oversee multiple technical and product development programmes, ensuring delivery against agreed scope, timelines, and milestones.
• Translate high‑level business and R&D objectives into clear, structured project plans, dependencies, and resourcing requirements.
• Work closely with senior leadership to align on scientific direction and strategic project approaches.
• Define, implement, and manage stage‑gate and go/no‑go decision processes for R&D projects, ensuring timely, data‑driven progression and prioritisation.
• Support and mentor cross‑functional teams, fostering accountability and high performance.
• As the Head of R&D, you will also support laboratory activities when required, contributing hands‑on during critical phases of research and development.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

• A Degree or higher level in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Proven experience in technical project or programme management within a scientific, engineering, or technology‑driven environment.
• Strong people management and leadership skills, with experience supporting, motivating, and developing diverse teams.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex scientific topics clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
