Main duties of the job
Cygnet Hospital Bierley provides acute and low secure mental health services for men and women across four wards offering single‑sex specialist care. All services are delivered within a recovery‑oriented framework and are reviewed through the CPA structure.
- Provide routine medical and psychiatric support including initial clerking and mental state examination of newly admitted patients.
- Carry out assessment, appropriate investigation, diagnosis and treatment under Consultant supervision of inpatients.
- Maintain good communication with ward nursing staff, mental health professionals and other agencies as required.
- Participate in weekly ward rounds and other multidisciplinary meetings, including CPA, Tribunal hearings & Section 117 meetings.
- Maintain full records of medical and psychiatric assessments and interventions.
- Prepare discharge summaries in line with company policies and guidelines.
- Attend mandatory training such as BLS, ILS, Breakaway training / PMVA training, Moving and Transferring, Infection Control, H&S.
- Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, staff, directors and other concerned bodies; maintain appropriate reports.
- Participate in the duty doctor on call rota 1 in 5.
Qualifications and experience
- Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified.
- Experienced and knowledgeable in General Adult Psychiatry.
- Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity.
- First‑rate communicator able to interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes.
- Committed to continued professional development.
- Able to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
- Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent, or working towards gaining such qualifications.

This programme will help you develop the skills you need to progress to Consultant level. You will rotate within wards/services to gain valuable experience across various subspecialties. An educational supervisor will review your progress and oversee your development, and you will receive support with MRCPsych exams.
