Assistant Head of Boarding

Key responsibilities

  • to deputise for the Head of Boarding (HoB), leading the House team as required, supporting outstanding pastoral care, maintaining high standards and ensuring the House meets the National Minimum Standards for Boarding (NMS)
  • to contribute to a strong House identity, supporting the promotion, recruitment and retention of boarders, and to represent the House at key events, including engagement with parents
  • to uphold and promote the Catholic ethos of the School, contributing to its spiritual life through regular involvement in Mass and liturgies, and supporting prayer, reflection and the faith development of boarders, including preparation for Sacraments
  • to foster a positive, inclusive and respectful House community, promoting high standards of behaviour, supporting the integration of new boarders, and contributing to a varied programme of social, evening and weekend activities
  • to monitor and support boarders’ academic progress, guide subject choices and aspirations, promote independent learning and intellectual curiosity, and support interview preparation and confidence-building
  • to promote the holistic development and wellbeing of boarders, encouraging participation across a range of activities, supporting healthy lifestyles and personal responsibility, and developing leadership and independence
  • to support and help deliver a broad co-curricular programme, encouraging participation and contributing to evening and weekend activities
  • to safeguard and promote the welfare of boarders, maintaining vigilance at all times, undertaking supervision duties, acting in loco parentis when required, and supporting health and wellbeing
  • to maintain effective communication with parents and colleagues, ensure accurate record-keeping, contribute to House communications, and support administrative tasks including travel arrangements

Person Specification

  • to have a clear understanding of and commitment to the values of a Catholic independent boarding and day School
  • to demonstrate the ability to contribute to spiritual, moral and faith development
  • to support and uphold the School’s Mission & Ethos
  • to have a strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
  • to hold a university degree
  • to have (where applicable) a successful track record of teaching up to A Level
  • to have knowledge or experience of boarding school environments
  • to have experience of working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • to have excellent communication, organisational, IT and management skills
  • to be able to contribute to co-curricular activities
  • to demonstrate a genuine professional interest in boarding and pastoral care
  • to have sound judgement, initiative and common sense
  • to have the ability to relate effectively to students and demonstrate empathy
  • to have the ability to create a nurturing and inclusive environment
  • to be a practising Catholic
  • to hold Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA) qualification(s)
  • to hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), where applicable
  • to have experience as a Boarding Tutor or Boarding Assistant
