Detention Custody Officer (DCO) – International Immigration Removals
Working as a DCO within our Gatwick team means that you will be escorting immigration returnees within the UK and flying internationally to their country of origin, other modes of transportation can be used in some circumstances. You will be responsible for maintaining high standards of safety and security for those being removed from the UK, whilst promoting their welfare and decency.
In this fast‑paced and sometimes physically challenging role you will need to have strong communication and interpersonal skills to support colleagues, work together in teams and a passion for delivering exceptional service to our returnees. No two days are the same and as you gain experience within this challenging role, we’ll support you throughout your time to grow and develop.
Qualifications
- British passport holder.
- Full and valid UK manual driving licence held for at least 12 months.
- Over the age of 21.
- License points must be 6 or less.
- Have lived in the UK continuously for the past five years with no single period of more than three consecutive months outside the UK during this time.
- Strong English and maths skills equivalent to GCSE level, with the ability to produce clear written reports that may be reviewed by official authorities.
- Physically fit and capable of meeting the demands of a role that may involve sustained physical activity.
- Willing and able to receive a Yellow Fever vaccination, which is a mandatory requirement for travel to certain countries.
Responsibilities
As a Detention Custody Officer you will escort immigration returnees, maintain safety and security, manage the boarding process to various destinations, and uphold welfare and decency for all individuals under your custody. You will work in shift patterns and collaborate closely with team members to deliver exceptional public service.

Training & Development
Upon successful selection and vetting, you will complete the paid 4‑week initial training course (ITC). You will then attend a residential programme focused on safe and lawful application of physical restraint and use of force. Over the next twelve months you will receive on‑the‑job mentoring and assessments, culminating in an accredited Level 3 apprenticeship in Detention and Custody.
