Architect a global Alumni & Advancement strategy. We need a Director (5+ years) to transform one-off volunteers into lifelong advocates and donors for 92 different projects globally. Design the system, create the training, and mentor local communities to lead their own growth.
Action Change is a disruptive force in charity work. We believe in moving away from international aid and toward financially sustainable, community‑led initiatives. This Alumni project is a critical part of that exit strategy. By turning volunteers into permanent advocates and donors, you are providing our local partners with a “Warm Audience” that they can tap into for expertise and fundraising—without needing Action Change as a middleman.
Currently, when a volunteer leaves, the community often loses a vital link to the outside world. Your work ensures that link is never broken. By professionalizing the alumni experience, you are helping local projects build their own global networks. This visibility is what allows these communities to remain resilient and financially independent. You are building an army of ambassadors who are equipped to tell the true story of local impact, helping to drive more visitors and more support directly to the source.
Furthermore, your commitment to mentorship ensures this project is a permanent asset. By training local leaders to manage their own alumni relations, you are gifting them a sophisticated professional skill set. This empowerment is what allows communities to move away from “rescue” and toward “sovereignty.” When a local project can successfully manage its own global advocates, it has achieved a level of sustainability that few grassroots initiatives ever reach. Your senior‑level strategy is the catalyst that makes this long‑term independence possible.
We are looking for a senior “Advancement Expert”—a professional with at least 3 years of experience in alumni relations, fundraising, or community engagement, ideally within a university or large‑scale non‑profit setting. This role is for a strategic thinker who understands that an alumni base is a community’s most valuable asset. You are someone who knows how to move beyond “transactional” communication and instead build a sense of lifelong belonging. As this is an unpaid, UK‑based role with a low‑intensity long‑term commitment, it is perfect for a senior leader looking to apply their professional rigor to a mission of local empowerment.
The most important quality you bring is a “Strategic Relationship” mindset. You must be able to design a system that feels personal and meaningful while remaining scalable across 92 different projects. We need a volunteer who can design a journey that converts a casual volunteer into a passionate, long‑term advocate. You should have a proven track record of building and scaling engagement programs, possessing a deep understanding of CRM management and digital communication loops. You are someone who values data but understands that storytelling is what drives engagement.
You must be a “Process Architect.” Because the goal is to hand this over to local leaders, you must be able to take complex engagement strategies and break them down into simple, actionable toolkits. You take pride in creating “sustainable” systems—projects that don’t rely on your constant presence to survive. Your portfolio should demonstrate your ability to organize data, create training materials, and manage high‑level projects with minimal oversight.
Finally, you must be a Natural Mentor. Action Change is an army of local change‑makers, and your job is to equip them with the tools to manage their own global relationships. You must have the patience and clarity to teach high‑level stewardship concepts to individuals who may have limited digital or fundraising experience. You are energized by the idea of seeing a local community leader take full ownership of their alumni network. If you are a senior professional who wants to move beyond “one‑off” volunteering and instead build a permanent infrastructure for global advocacy, this is your platform. You will have the creative freedom to design a legacy of connection that supports communities in urgent need for years to come.
As our Alumni & Advocacy Program Director, your mission is to apply high‑level “Advancement” and “Alumni Relations” strategies to the international development sector. While our communities welcome thousands of passionate volunteers, we lack a formal, sustainable framework to keep these individuals engaged as long‑term stakeholders. You will be the lead architect of a global Alumni Ecosystem that turns former volunteers into lifelong ambassadors, repeat visitors, and strategic fundraisers for our 92 global projects.
This is a remote, UK‑based, unpaid position requiring a commitment of less than 15 hours per week during the setup phase, moving to just 1–2 hours of monthly mentorship once established. You will work with total autonomy to design and implement this program, focusing on high‑level strategy and system creation without the requirement to line‑manage paid employees.
Drawing on best practices from university alumni or non‑profit fundraising sectors, you will lead the research phase to identify the “triggers” for long‑term engagement. You will design a “Volunteer‑to‑Advocate” journey, creating a structured program that encourages alumni to return to the field, promote global issues, and drive sustainable traffic and funding back to the communities they served.
Once the strategy is set, you will build a “Digital Advocacy Toolkit.” This includes designing the CRM systems for tracking alumni, creating communication templates, and developing a structured “Ambassador Program.” You are building the professional bridge that allows a local school or wildlife project to maintain a direct, sophisticated relationship with their international supporters, independent of the parent organization.
In line with Action Change’s core philosophy of local empowerment, your final goal is to transition the daily operations to the communities themselves. You will develop easy‑to‑follow training materials and provide direct mentorship to local community leaders. You are teaching them the “art of stewardship”—showing them how to manage their own global networks and keep the momentum alive.
After the initial build and training phase, the role transitions into a long‑term advisory position. You will remain available for a 1–2 hour monthly check‑in to provide strategic oversight, troubleshoot challenges, and ensure the project remains active. You are the “guardian” of the alumni legacy, ensuring the system you built continues to deliver impact for years to come.
