Job Specification – Private Client Paralegal (Wills, Probate & Trusts)

Salary: £28,000 – £31,000 (DOE)

Overview
A well‑established and client‑focused law firm in Chelmsford is seeking an experienced Private Client Paralegal to support their growing team. The successful candidate will assist with a varied caseload including wills, probate, trusts, LPAs, and estate administration, while ensuring exceptional client care and efficient file management.
This role is ideal for a paralegal looking to deepen their experience in Private Client work within a supportive and reputable team.
Key Responsibilities
Wills & Estate Planning
- Assist in drafting wills, codicils, and letters of wishes.
- Arrange and prepare client meetings to take detailed instructions.
- Conduct legal research relating to inheritance tax and estate planning.
Probate & Estate Administration
- Prepare probate applications and gather necessary documentation.
- Liaise with executors, beneficiaries, HMCTS, and financial institutions.
- Assist in collecting and valuing assets, preparing estate accounts, and distributing estates.
Trust Administration
- Support solicitors with the creation and administration of trusts.
- Maintain trust records, accounts, and compliance documentation.
Lasting Powers of Attorney
- Draft LPAs and guide clients through signing and registration processes.
- Liaise with the OPG and assist with correspondence.
General File Support & Administration
- Manage and maintain accurate client files in compliance with SRA and firm policies.
- Carry out AML checks, ID verification, and onboarding processes.
- Draft correspondence and legal documentation under supervision.
- Assist with billing, time recording, and administrative duties.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
- Minimum 1+ year Private Client Paralegal experience, ideally in wills & probate.
- Strong understanding of the probate process and Private Client terminology.
- Excellent drafting skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
- Confident communicator with a warm, professional client manner.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Proficient using case management systems and Microsoft Office.
Desirable
- Experience drafting wills and LPAs independently.
- Knowledge of tax considerations relating to estates (IHT, CGT).
- ILEx / STEP qualification or willingness to work towards it.
