Community Adult Consultant Psychiatrist
This full‑time post is for the Havering Mental Wellness Team South (MHWT‑S), based at Oasis House, 28‑30 Gubbins Lane, Harold Wood, RM3 0QA. The role combines clinical leadership, direct patient care and collaboration across the mental‑health care pathway.
It is a substantive post with 10 Programmed Activities (10 PAs): 7.5 Direct Clinical Contact activities and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities.
Rationale for Post
The post was created following the transformation of adult community mental‑health services to establish a single mental‑health team for the neighbourhood. It is currently occupied by a locum consultant.
On‑call Responsibilities
The postholder will join the Senior Psychiatrist on‑call rota covering out‑of‑hours for Adult and Older Adult services within NELFT. This is a 1:40 rota with a 3 % Category A salary supplement. Additionally, the postholder participates in a daytime (9 am‑5 pm) Section 136 rota, with a lead role on emergency Mental‑Health Act assessments at the Goodmayes site.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership, supervising the multidisciplinary team and developing links across the mental‑health pathway and primary‑care networks.
- Deliver direct clinical care to adults with mental‑health needs registered with GP practices in the southern part of the London Borough of Havering.
- Supervise Specialty Doctors and Core Trainees, dividing responsibilities between consultants.
- Organise and prioritise own and team workload in line with Trust protocols.
- Ensure effective clinical and team‑level risk management.
- Maintain personal professional development and support a culture of lifelong learning.
- Facilitate integration of new staff and support team‑wide training initiatives.
- Deliver in‑service teaching to medical students, trainees, and multidisciplinary team members.
- Complete all patient‑related administrative tasks accurately and promptly.
- Use the Trust’s electronic case record system effectively.
- Collaborate with the team manager and senior colleagues to ensure safe, high‑quality care through clinical governance.
- Act as line manager for resident doctors.
- Contribute to service development, business planning, and clinical leadership within the service and directorate.
- Demonstrate leadership to foster effective teamwork and positive relationships across the Trust.
- Promote integrated care and a supportive team culture.
- Participate in Trust‑wide mental‑health strategy and advocate for co‑production in service development.
- Share knowledge and best practice based on current research and evidence.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, senior managers, and clinical leads.
- Convey complex patient information clearly to support collaborative decision‑making.
Staffing and Teaching Opportunities
The team includes 3 whole‑time equivalent consultants, 2 wte SAS doctors, and 1 wte Core/GP trainee. The postholder will also have opportunities to take an active role in teaching during clinical curriculum delivery, delivering lectures, and acting as an examiner in clinical examinations at Queen Mary University of London.
