Locum Consultant Neonatologist

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and job roles. The system provides acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern for this post is resident shifts and on‑call. This is a fixed‑term post for 12 months. Salary is pro‑rata for part‑time hours.

The post is a whole‑time locum consultant in Neonatology to cover maternity leave. Successful applicants will deliver inpatient care in the neonatal units at the Royal Hospital for Children and the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley, and will deliver neonatal outpatient clinics at the Royal Hospital for Children.

The Royal Hospital for Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Glasgow (RHC) is the largest of the three units in GG&C, providing level 3 neonatal services with 16 intensive care, 14 high‑dependency and 20 special‑care cots. It is the lead perinatal centre for the west of Scotland and part of the Scottish Perinatal Network, providing regional and national services.

Responsibilities include:

• Delivering inpatient care in neonatal units.
• Delivering neonatal outpatient clinics.
• Working closely with perinatal and specialist paediatric services.
• Working as part of a team of consultants to develop the service.
• Delivering sustainable training for medical and nursing staff.
• Supporting research and quality improvement.

Qualifications

• Medically qualified with MRCPCH or equivalent.
• Completion of higher specialist neonatal training (GRID) or equivalent (CCT in neonatology).
• Newborn Life Support trained (or equivalent).

Experience

• Comprehensive general neonatology.
• Paediatric specialty experience.
• Neurodevelopmental follow‑up.
• Neonatal transport experience.

Behavioural Competencies

• Ability to work in a multi‑disciplinary team.
• Flexible.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to organise effectively.

Additional Skills and Experience

• Experience in medical research and audit.
• Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
• Experience in protocol and guideline development.
• Teaching experience.
