Department Overview

The management of operational risk is a key business priority for Nomura and is vital to the successful delivery of the firm’s strategy. The EMEA operational risk team is responsible for the development of operational risk management for the region, including:

  • Developing the operational risk strategy and governance framework
  • Establishing a set of operational risk products and services to support the business areas’ management of operational risk
  • Developing the tools and templates to allow the effective collection, review and use of operational risk information
  • Working with Risk & Control officers across the business to embed an operational risk culture throughout the organisation
  • Operational Risk forms part of the Second Line of Defence within the Risk Department

Overview

The role resides in the EMEA Operational Risk function with key responsibilities for 2LoD oversight of the Technology Department and Business Resilience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the EMEA ORM Head of Technology Risk (2LoD) in face‑off to senior 1st line stakeholders (primarily in the Technology function, but also in Business Resilience and other departments as required), regionally and globally.
  • Challenge the completeness and accuracy of risk self‑assessments and ensure mitigation actions are implemented effectively.
  • Support the global Technology Risk team in establishing a global understanding and consistent approach to Technology risk management by the business.
  • Develop a close working relationship with key business stakeholders and provide ongoing communication of key Operational Risk developments and requirements.
  • Provide support and challenge to key business stakeholders in developing and maintaining Operational Risk products; including RCSAs, KRIs, Scenario Analysis and event management.
  • Identify key trends, issues and other insights requiring further investigation and follow up with the business as appropriate.

Key Objectives for Success

  • Excellent relationship‑management skills with Technology/Business Resilience management across the region and globally.
  • Strong technology and business resilience risk‑management skills with expert knowledge of industry frameworks such as NIST, ISO27001, COBIT, CIS, and of regulations such as DORA and UK Operational Resilience rules.
  • Good coordination, documentation and presentation skills for deep‑dive investigations into business risk drivers or risk scenario analysis.
  • Ability to work well as part of a global team, coordinating across regions and disciplines.

Skills, Experience, Qualifications and Knowledge

  • Experience in operational risk or related functions in financial services institutions, particularly in relation to Technology risk and Business Resilience.
  • A good understanding and awareness of regulatory drivers or laws in the Technology and Resilience space.
  • Good data analysis abilities using Excel.
  • An understanding of the role of Operational Risk in a Wholesale business.
  • Display commercial awareness and an understanding of key business priorities.
  • Solid understanding of the components of an operational risk management framework.

Desirable Attributes

  • Investment banking and/or capital markets knowledge and experience.
