Specialist Medical Engineer – Band 6

We are seeking a skilled, experienced and motivated Band 6 Medical Engineer to join our Medical Engineering department at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

The role is full‑time (37.5 hours per week) and involves maintaining a wide range of complex medical equipment, participating in a 24/7 on‑call rota, and working independently with a high standard of safety and care.

Responsibilities

  • Commission, repair, maintain, overhaul, re‑calibrate and de‑commission medical equipment including life support, patient monitoring, IV therapy, diagnostic, ventilators, pathology, radiology, pharmacy and anaesthetic equipment.
  • Work on patient‑connected equipment in ICUs, HDUs, theatres and other specialties, often in hazardous environments.
  • Operate under pressure, act as a lone worker, and respond promptly to emergencies.
  • Attend required training, update technical knowledge, and disseminate information to clinical staff.
  • Maintain compliance with Department of Health guidelines, statutory regulations, manufacturer procedures and Trust safety policies.
  • Complete documentation: safety tests, fault history, commissioning records and upload information to the Trust medical equipment management system.
  • Support and supervise junior staff, provide training, and contribute to the development of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the evaluation of new equipment, participate in trials, and support one‑off modifications where necessary.
  • Co‑operate with external manufacturers, arrange return to service and manage stock levels of spare parts.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal discipline and attitude, liaising with other healthcare professionals and patients.

Qualifications & Experience

  • HNC/degree (or equivalent) with specialist medical device technical training provided by manufacturers.
  • Several years’ experience maintaining high‑risk medical equipment in a healthcare environment.
  • Experience of a broad range of medical devices, including anaesthetic machines, ventilators and other complex equipment.
  • Ability to interpret schematic diagrams and perform fault finding and component identification.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory capacity or with junior staff.
  • Experience working in an acute healthcare setting and participating in a 24/7 on‑call system.
  • Current driving licence and vehicle access or ability to transport self and equipment 24/7.
  • Registered as a Clinical Technologist (preferred) or hold a Master’s Degree in a relevant subject.

Knowledge of

  • Medical Device Directive and other regulations.
  • CQC Essential standards and MHRA publications.
  • ISO9002 or ISO9001‑2000.
  • Electrical safety testing of medical devices.
  • Multi‑skilled engineering practices for medical devices.
  • Pathology and pharmacy equipment.

Experience of

  • Repairing medical devices to component level, including ventilators, anaesthetic machines and specialist equipment.
  • Interpreting schematic diagrams for fault finding and component identification.
  • Supervisory roles and training of staff.
  • Working in acute healthcare environments.
  • Participating in a 24/7 on‑call system.

Education and Training

  • A degree or higher‑level qualification.
  • Specialist medical device maintenance training delivered by manufacturer courses.
  • Driving licence and vehicle access or transport ability.
  • Registered as a Clinical Technologist.

Salary

£39,959 to £48,117 a year (salary and duties will depend on experience).
