Start your engineering journey with us and grow into a future Senior Authorised Person. National Grid is hiring a Substation Engineer; role based around the Gloucestershire area and within 45 minutes travel to Gloucester. No sponsorship is offered for this position.
This role initially is focused on training. You will join one of our local regional teams and spend the first 18–24 months on a training programme gaining on-site and classroom experience, with short stays away from home, building your skill base and safety authorisations needed to progress.
Once qualified, you will move into the Senior Authorised Person (SAP) role with an increased base salary to £57,163 per annum. As a Substation Engineer SAP you’ll lead teams of fitters and contractors on high voltage substation projects, ensuring work is planned and executed safely. Your responsibilities include risk assessments, method statements, toolbox talks, and monitoring progress on safety‑critical works. You may undertake site delivery activities as the appointed temporary works coordinator and principal contractor as defined in CDM regs, and you may participate in standby rota for emergency call outs.
Joining the standby rota provides additional payments for your availability and expertise.
