Our Integrated Mental Health and Substance Misuse Team at HMP Long Lartin is looking for a dynamic and experienced registered mental health nurse. This is an exciting and diverse role for an individual who is passionate about providing excellent quality nursing care. You will have the privilege to influence and shape the provision of high‑quality mental health care to some of society's most vulnerable members.

Requirements:

  • Experienced RMN with a flexible approach and a drive to clinically innovate.
  • Committed to providing high‑quality care, developing your skills, and confident in dealing with a wide range of situations.
  • Enthusiastic about working within an ever‑changing prison environment and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and its application to prisoners requiring transfer to hospital.

Main duties of the job

Working effectively within the team you will provide evidence‑based interventions, manage a caseload of patients and undertake assessments and reviews. You will act as a care coordinator using a Care Programme Approach, communicating effectively with all parties involved in the care of patients in custody and at release.

You will work with individuals from initial assessment through to discharge, including transferring care to other providers such as hospitals or CMHTs, whilst working with a variety of agencies in the Offender Health Pathway. You will help to rehabilitate and support service users to live hopeful and fulfilling lives as members of the community.

Job responsibilities

  • Take a recovery‑focused and holistic approach with the people who access our services.
  • Deliver care and interventions using the stepped care model, including the CPA Framework where appropriate.
  • Assess needs, develop, implement and evaluate personalised care plans.
  • Facilitate therapeutic group work and lead where appropriate.
  • Deliver evidence‑based interventions.
  • Identify people requiring hospital treatment and facilitate the timely transfer under the Mental Health Act.

A relocation package may be considered for the right applicant.

Qualifications

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Register.
  • Evidence of recent CPD and compliance with NMC revalidation.
  • Teaching Certificate including annual update (ENB 603) or related mentoring/coaching qualification.

Experience

  • Considerable experience of working in the mental health field.
  • Experience of providing specialist interventions for those with mental health problems, including counselling techniques, CBT, motivational interviewing.
  • Providing supervision and line management of staff.
