Experienced Mechanical Engineer - Instrument Design

Newton Colmore is working with a tech company in Cambridge that manufacture a variety of instruments and systems, assisting them in their search for a mechanical design engineer.

We are looking for a talented Mechanical Engineer to join a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers working on breakthrough technology for several different sectors, from airport scanners through to radar systems. You will own the full product lifecycle - from requirements capture through design, development, testing, and delivery to production - on projects ranging from proof-of-concept work to working prototypes.

What you will be doing.

Using SolidWorks and other 3D CAD tools, you will design a wide variety of solutions including products, assembly jigs, test equipment, and instrumentation. You will also present proposed solutions through sketches, animations, and renderings, and get hands‑on with build, testing, and troubleshooting.

Core skills required for this technical role.

• 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Catia, Creo or AutoCAD)
• CAD design & manufacturing
• Design for manufacture
• Welding & fabrication design
• Thermal simulation / modelling
• PDM experience or familiarity

Desirable experience (not essential)

• Electronics / PCB integration
• Supply chain liaison
• Ruggedised design
• Miniaturised / small form factor
• Active / passive cooling
• Additive manufacture
