Lead Urology Cancer Nurse Specialist, Band 7

Overview

The role of the Lead Cancer Nurse Specialist in Urology is a great opportunity to develop your clinical and professional practice along with leadership and management experiences. Excellent communication skills and self‑awareness are required for your own and other staff well‑being. The post holder will work effectively as part of a team and autonomously, acting as an expert practitioner within the Urology team demonstrating highly developed specialist knowledge in the management of patients with urological diseases and their physical and emotional care.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient plans and implement care, provide specialist advice, maintain associated records.
• Work as a specialist for patients with suspected or diagnosed urological cancers.
• Provide specialist education and training to other staff, patients and carers.
• Provide support to the Band 6 Urology Oncologist Nurse Specialist/PSA Tracker role and Cancer support worker.
• Lead and manage a team of CNS ensuring appraisals are timely, rosters are completed, HR issues are escalated and managed, audits and risk assessments are completed, and financial awareness and budget reviews are completed.
• Serve as a specialist for a defined clinical area providing line management to other team members on lower bands.
• Undertake research activities and lead clinical audits in own specialist area.
• Provide psychological support to patients and their families, including breaking bad news of a cancer diagnosis or disease progression on a regular basis, and undertake holistic needs assessments at appropriate stages.
• Communicate with a range of staff of all disciplines, acting as a highly specialist resource and liaising with health care providers both within and outside the Trust regarding diagnosis and treatment advice, including referrals to other professionals such as oncologists.
• Maintain confidentiality at all times.

Team

The Urology Team consists of 13 consultants, 8 clinical nurse specialists and 2 cancer support workers, along with a specialist administrative team to support the patient journey and experience. The team is based in the new Urology Department at Alstone Clinic and includes nurse practitioners, surgical care practitioners and a specialised ward in Cheltenham.
