Junior Sister / Charge Nurse - Aconbury 3, Renal Unit

We are looking for a Band 6 nurse with a passion for renal medicine to join our newly established Renal Unit at Aconbury 3. This role will lead the delivery of high quality, evidence‑based care to patients and support the development of an acute in‑patient dialysis service.
Main duties of the job
- Lead by example and prioritise infection prevention and control while delivering evidence‑based care.
- Co‑ordinate and prioritise care in a busy environment, working with a multi‑professional team of consultants, doctors and nurses.
- Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team, patients, families and carers.
- Support the ward sister, matron for medicine and specialist nurses in running the unit.
- Maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within team nursing frameworks.
- Provide effective leadership and act as a role model, liaising with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Supervise junior staff and teach qualified and unqualified staff as appropriate.
- Ensure the maintenance of a high standard of nursing care at all times through effective management of staff and resources, and be available for advice and support within the unit.
- Be prepared to work variable hours, including early, late, night shifts and weekends.
Experience
- Competent to undertake venepuncture / cannulation.
- Evidence of up‑to‑date knowledge of NHS/professional issues.
- Experience and knowledge within the speciality or related field.
- Clinical credibility and organisational skills.
- Leadership skills with ability to inspire and motivate others.
- Full awareness of principles of infection control.
- Ability to produce written reports and articulate concerns regarding patient care/safety issues.
- Computer literacy appropriate to the post.
- Knowledge of the ageing process and related mental & physical health problems.
- Understanding of the Trust’s values and nursing strategy.
- Teamworking ability.
- Capacity to deal with emotional aspects such as terminal illness, trauma, chronic/critical illness, bereavement and challenging behaviour.
- Ability to work independently within the boundaries of the role.
Qualifications
- Registered General Nurse (RGN) with current registration.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
- Evidence of management experience / training.
- Post‑registration qualification or experience in the specialty.
- NMC recognised teaching and assessing qualification.
- Experience at Band 5 within the specialty or related field.
- Ward/departmental management experience at Band 5 or above.
- Ward/department based teaching experience.
- Experience managing clinical risk and incidents at ward/department level.
- Higher degree (e.g., MSc, PGDip).
- Experience in clinical audit activity.
- Experience with staff appraisals and PDR formation.
- Experience with sickness absence / performance management.
- Experience handling complaints.
- Ability to use Essence of Care standards.
Other Job Requirements
- Occasional requirements to work in other areas of the hospital.
- Constant standing / walking and ability to undertake manual handling and movement tasks.
- Prepared and able to work variable shift patterns (early, late, night, 7 days a week).
- Awareness of self‑presentation to patients and relatives.
