Junior Sister / Charge Nurse Cath Lab
Job Summary
- Responsible for the day to day, smooth running of the PPCI 24/7 within the Cardiac Catheter Suite.
- Service runs on a shift rota basis, with on‑call 24/7.
- Provide effective leadership and act as a role model, working with the multidisciplinary team to coordinate all aspects of care in the best interests of the patient and family.
- Maintain high‑quality, patient‑focused care through effective leadership, staff and resource management.
- Lead a team of nurses to deliver a high standard of care in pre‑assessment, peri‑ and post‑procedure care and follow‑up for angiography, elective/primary/rescue angioplasty, pacemakers and cardioversion patients.
- Act as team leader for clinical staff.
- Assume clinical and non‑clinical management of a ward area in the absence of the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse.
Main duties of the job
- Establish and maintain communication and relationships internally and externally.
- Foster good working relationships with all multidisciplinary teams.
- Provide and receive complex and/or sensitive information from patients and staff; e.g., breaking bad news, giving complex information about procedures and outcomes, dealing with performance issues, holding staff meetings, and supporting distressed patients, visitors, and staff members.
- Cascade information to ward staff and chair staff meetings; minutes are provided.
- Use electronic internal/external mail and Internet systems as appropriate.
- Deal with comments, complaints or incidents that affect staff and users, in accordance with complaints, risk management or human resources procedures.
- Flag any factors that may adversely affect patient care or service provision to the Senior Sister/Charge.
- Report all serious incidents to the appropriate Manager/Director within 24 hours (including Never Events, serious falls and grade 3 or 4 pressure ulcers).
Job responsibilities
Beknowledgeable about the specific care requirements of patients who may be admitted to the area.
Beknowledgeable about current infection control procedures and policies and ensure all staff and visitors adhere to these at all times.
Beknowledgeable about the risks of infection and take responsibility for minimising cross‑infection within the clinical environment, assist in giving information and placing patients appropriately.
Beknowledgeable about all aspects of pre‑assessment, peri‑ and post‑procedure care and follow‑up of angiography, elective/primary/rescue angioplasty and pacemakers and cardioversion patients.
Ensure patient care is evidence‑based and that the patient's journey is streamlined. Develop and implement patient pathways as appropriate (e.g., Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS), fractured neck of femur).
Use a wide range of knowledge in determining, at the time of assessment or admission, the most appropriate and safe patient pathway.
Identify, assess, and act accordingly at any point on the pathway, including discharge when patients no longer meet the agreed appropriate and safe pathway.
Assess and act upon potential problems or issues to ensure a safe, effective environment for staff, patients and visitors.
Identify, analyse, and act upon staff situations when there is conflict and/or deviation from Trust or local policies and procedures.
Identify, analyse, action and discuss with Senior Sister/Charge Nurse any change‑management issues that arise.
Person Specification
Experience
- Two years Cath Lab or Cardiology experience.
- Cardiology clinical experience.
- Ability to manage own workload and delegate appropriately.
- Cardiac rehabilitation.
- Keyboard and computer skills.
- Clinical audit.
Qualifications
- Evidence of professional development.
- Evidence of management experience/training.
- Immediate Life Support.
- Mentorship for assessment or equivalent.
- Cardiac Practice/ Critical Care pathway or equivalent, or working towards.
- ITU/HDU experience.
