Liaison Mental Health Practitioner (RMN/OT/Social Worker) East Staffs

Responsibilities
- Provide high‑quality mental health assessment, risk assessment and treatment for patients presenting with mental health issues within a physical healthcare setting.
- Provide indirect patient care via formal and informal consultancy, supporting staff training in mental health and wellbeing.
- Specialist assessment and care planning with service users, carers and evaluation of individual treatment plans.
- Facilitate timely and safe discharge of patients from hospital and assist staff in managing mental‑health‑related risks.
- Develop and communicate formulations and care programmes, including changes to patients, families/carers and clinical colleagues.
- Undertake robust risk assessments and promote positive risk taking to improve quality of life and occupational performance.
- Deliver interventions according to the agreed plan of care and pathway guidance.
- Work scheduled shifts covering 24/7, 365 on a rota basis; flexible working arrangements may be discussed at interview.
- Travel across multiple sites (Burton on Trent, Lichfield, Tamworth) and a large geographical area; suitable transport required.
Qualifications
- Qualified and registered mental health practitioner (nursing RMN/RN/LD Nurse, occupational therapy, or social work) with a relevant degree or equivalent.
- Evidence of professional training and short courses relevant to the role.
- Training or experience managing suicide risk and risk assessment.
- Awareness of common physical health conditions and their relationship with mental illness.
- Professional education or qualification in psychological therapies (e.g., CBT or solution‑focused interventions).
Experience
- Extensive post‑registration experience in diverse mental health settings, including working with distressed patients.
- Therapeutic experience in crisis and/or liaison services.
- Previous provision of liaison psychiatry services.
- Experience with older adults, adults of working age, children and young people, alcohol and substance use clients, and perinatal mental health.
Skills and Knowledge
- Assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of mental health care/treatment interventions.
- Psychological interventions and suicide risk assessment/management.
- Excellent communication, engagement of professionals, carers and patients.
- Solid knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and related applications.
- Awareness of liaison psychiatry service functions within the NHS system.
- Effective collaboration with statutory and non‑statutory agencies.
