About the role
This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified Systemic Family Practitioner (SFP) to be part of an expanding Specialist Perinatal Service, working collaboratively to deliver the ambitions of the NHS Long Term Plan in Greater Manchester. The role involves expanding psychological therapies to include couples’ and family interventions for women and families referred to the service.
Location
We have opportunities for 3 full‑time (37.5 hours/week) Systemic Family Practitioners to work in Greater Manchester across three clusters:
- Cluster 1 (Central and South Manchester, Trafford and Stockport) – based at Laureate House
- Cluster 2 (Bury, Bolton, Salford and Wigan) – based at Hexagon Tower
- Cluster 3 (North Manchester, Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale, Oldham, Tameside and Glossop) – based at Central Park
Service Overview
The service provides specialist assessment and intervention for women/birthing people and their families experiencing moderate to severe mental health difficulties during pregnancy and the first post‑natal year, recognising that perinatal mental health challenges occur within relational and systemic contexts.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical
- Undertake thorough specialist systemic assessments of women referred to the team, gathering information from families and other professionals.
- Provide systemic assessment, formulation and intervention in the perinatal period, delivering a range of systemic skills to individuals, couples and families.
- Conduct risk assessment and manage risk related to self‑harm.
- Manage a complex caseload, exercising autonomy within supervisory structures for assessment, treatment and discharge.
- Collaborate with patients and families to develop clinical formulations and treatment plans, documenting these in writing for referrers and other professionals.
- Implement systemic techniques appropriate to client needs, including couples, co‑parenting and family interventions.
- Offer advice, guidance and consultation to team members, drawing on systemic theory and evidence.
- Work under supervision of a clinical Family and Systemic Psychotherapist, ensuring sensitivity to the needs of diverse families.
- Identify and respond to child protection issues according to trust procedures.
- Maintain professional confidentiality and establish clear communication with local agencies such as Social Services, Midwives, Health Visitors and GP.
- Facilitate collaboration and joint working with other relevant professionals.
Teaching, Training & Support
- Participate in service and team reviews, in line with Trust and Directorate needs.
- Attend training courses, talks and seminars for multidisciplinary teams.
- Engage in regular systemic clinical supervision and other relevant supervision from senior colleagues.
- Stay current with developments and research in perinatal mental health and systemic practices.
- Undergo individual performance reviews, maintaining professional standards and updating as required.
- Support the formulation and adherence to Health and Safety policies.
- Provide consultation and training to professionals outside the team, aligned with qualification level.
Administration
- Maintain comprehensive clinical notes, letters, reports and summaries.
- Record and submit statistical information to the service and trust data collection system.
- Complete administrative tasks within timeframes set by service protocols.
- Attend and contribute to referral meetings, business meetings, supervision and support meetings.
- Help formulate and evaluate policies, proposing improvements where appropriate.
Clinical Governance
- Participate in team evaluations, risk assessments, audit meetings and evidence‑based projects.
- Assist in ensuring all practice is clinically safe and evidence‑based.
- Support research projects within the local team, directorate or trust.
- Contribute to initiatives ensuring service quality, such as client satisfaction questionnaires.
