An exciting opportunity has emerged within Cathedral Eye Clinic for a Registered Nurse to work within our state-of-the-art clinic in Belfast. This is a fantastic opportunity to work within our ophthalmic clinic/hospital which provides the highest standards of care.


The role:

  • Admission nurse: Ensuring that all patients proceeding to surgery have had the opportunity to understand the potential risks and benefits of treatment.
  • Assisting within the anaesthetic room: preparing patients for their cataract/laser/Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) treatment and undertaking pre-screening diagnostic duties.
  • Supporting the Nurse Manager and assisting with infection control audits.
  • Ensuring file preparation prior to treatment day is actioned in order to minimise potential complications, cancellations/ postponement. Liaising with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure outstanding issues are addressed prior to surgery.
  • Discharging patients from surgery with appropriate prescribed medication and advice, including emergency contact numbers. Arranging follow up care.
  • Ensuring patient care is appropriate and individual requests are accommodated as far as is reasonable and safe.
  • Aptitude to learn how to operate the ophthalmic laser equipment, with training provided where required.


Job Requirements

  • Registered Nurse. Practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct /Health Professions Council.
  • Participating as a member of the theatre nursing team, in anaesthetics, scrub, circulating and recovery also roles outside the theatre environment.
  • Collaborating with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure efficient patient management.
  • Developing standards of care: conducting audits that enable the effectiveness of nursing care to be evaluated. Where deficits in standards are identified, plan a teaching programme to address these issues and re-audit as necessary.
  • Developing and implement Theatre guidelines and protocols in adherence with Clinic & RQIA policies, ensuring all staff are familiar with same.
  • Maintaining accurate and legible patient nursing records (either on computer or manually) and ensure their safe keeping.
  • Assisting in compiling the operations register and the accurate recording of survey reports.
  • Ensuring that Health and Safety risk assessments are undertaken and kept under review. Comply with COSSH and Health & Safety at Work Order (N.I.) 1978
  • Previous Ophthalmic experience is highly desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
