Location: Pierson Road, The Enterprise Campus, Alconbury Weald, Huntingdon, PE28 4YA

Hours: 40 hours per week (Monday–Friday)

Our Engineering team plays a vital role in ensuring operational continuity, safety, and continuous improvement across the site.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced and driven Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Engineering function at our Alconbury Weald site. This is a key leadership role with responsibility for the performance, development and strategic direction of the engineering team, including Engineering Supervisors, Maintenance Engineers and Apprentices.

Working closely with the Chief Engineer, you will oversee all aspects of engineering operations, ensuring high levels of equipment reliability, compliance with health and safety standards, effective cost control, and the delivery of continuous improvement initiatives. You will play a pivotal role in shaping engineering strategy and supporting the wider business to achieve its operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide strong leadership and clear direction to the engineering team, ensuring alignment with business goals
  • Manage and develop Engineering Supervisors, Maintenance Engineers and Apprentices
  • Conduct performance reviews, identify training and development needs and implement succession planning
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement

Maintenance Strategy & Engineering Excellence

  • Develop, implement and monitor a robust Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) strategy
  • Drive improvements in equipment up time, reliability and overall performance
  • Analyse equipment and maintenance data to identify improvement and cost-reduction opportunities
  • Collaborate with the Chief Engineer on capital expenditure and improvement projects, ensuring delivery on time and within budget

Operational & Cost Management

  • Oversee day-to-day engineering operations, ensuring rapid response to breakdowns and minimal production downtime
  • Work closely with Production and other departments to ensure engineering support meets operational needs
  • Manage engineering budgets, resources and critical spare parts availability
  • Promote high standards of housekeeping and GMP compliance within engineering areas

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Act as a senior point of accountability for health and safety within the engineering department
  • Ensure full compliance with health and safety legislation and company standards
  • Review risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Investigate incidents and near-misses, implementing corrective actions and preventative measures

Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with the Chief Engineer to align engineering strategy with overall business objectives
  • Work cross-functionally with Production, Planning and Quality teams to drive operational efficiency
  • Participate in senior management meetings and contribute to business decision-making
  • Ensure clear, consistent communication of priorities, objectives and performance across the engineering team

About You

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven leadership and people-management capability, with experience developing high-performing teams
  • Extensive knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering and maintenance principles
  • Strong strategic and analytical thinking with a proactive, solutions-focused approach
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects effectively
  • Strong understanding of health and safety legislation and engineering compliance requirements
  • Experience using CMMS systems and maintenance planning tools

Desirable

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical or related Engineering discipline
  • Experience in a senior engineering management role within a manufacturing or FMCG environment
  • Demonstrable success delivering capital expenditure and improvement projects
  • Strong commercial awareness and experience managing budgets
