The Rotherham Foundation Trust (TRFT) is committed to providing the highest quality care to the children and families of Rotherham and this is an exciting opportunity to join the trust as a valued Consultant Paediatrician providing senior medical input into the Community Paediatric team.
The post will give the candidate the opportunity to work in a range of community settings such as Special Schools and Community clinics although you will be based in Rotherham Hospital to ensure easy access to regular team meetings, supportive colleagues (including acute and community paediatricians) and good administrative support.
This role will offer the opportunity to take a strategic safeguarding role within Rotherham as the Designated Doctor for Safeguarding. This is a statutory role within the ICB which is bought in from Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, one day a week.
There will also be an opportunity if desired to be involved in the Children in Care service carrying out adoption work sitting on the adoption panel and ensuring high quality medical advice/statutory documentation to inform multi‑agency decision making.

Main duties of the job
This role is offered as a part‑time permanent post 3.5 days per week and will comprise a job plan including 2 or more of the following.
- Allocated doctor for one or more of Rotherhams special schools, providing assessment, monitoring, advice and well‑planned transition to adult services, as well as working closely with the SEND nursing and therapy teams.
- Delivering neurodevelopmental clinics within the community.
- Carrying out Initial Health Assessments for children coming into care.
- Carrying out medicals and associated work for the Children in Care service.
- Designated Doctor for Safeguarding role.
There are opportunities for the post‑holder to expand their portfolio and personal interests and to take part and lead in ongoing service development. There will also be educational opportunities on offer to supervise and teach specialty community paediatric trainees and/or medical students from Sheffield University in clinical and group settings.

Job responsibilities
Your primary clinical responsibilities will include two or more of the following depending on your skills and experience.
- Being the allocated doctor for one or more of Rotherhams special schools, providing assessment and monitoring, advice and well‑planned transition to adult services. You will work closely with the SEND nursing and therapy teams.
- Delivering neurodevelopmental clinics within community clinics.
- Carrying out initial health assessments for children coming into care.
- To support the Children in Care service through medical advice and statutory reports to the Local Authority.
- To adopt the role of Designated Paediatrician for Safeguarding. This is a statutory role funded by the Integrated Care Board 1 day a week.
- To provide a clinical role in the continuing development of the Paediatric Service including contributing to running an efficient and high‑quality service.
- To take a key role with regard to the supervision and training of medical staff in junior grades and the development of support staff.
- To carry out teaching and training as required and, in particular, to take an active part in the education programme of medical undergraduate students from Sheffield University.
- To provide on a reciprocal basis, a Consultant service for Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust in the absence of your Consultant colleagues.
- You will have full continuing clinical responsibility for patients under your care and the provision of treatment. This may require the provision of advice and assistance to Consultants in other specialties, and the proper delegation to junior medical staff.
Person Specification
Clinical Skills
- Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
- Specialist skills in examination of children who may have been abused in any form.
- Specialist general paediatric clinical skills appropriate to Community Paediatrics.
- Knowledge of statutory framework for Looked After Children.
- Knowledge of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Framework.
Research and Audit
- Clear understanding of clinical governance.
- Clear understanding of clinical effectiveness (audit and quality improvement).
- Recent involvement in audit/service improvement projects with evidence of implemented change.
- Relevant publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Experience of writing and developing clinical guidelines.
- Experience in governance processes such as risk assessment, serious incident reviews and/or patient safety investigations.
Experience
- Comprehensive training and experience in Community Paediatrics.
- Evidence of training and experience gained obtaining CCT in Community Child Health (CCH) or if CCT in General Paediatrics must be able to demonstrate equivalent competencies required for CCT in CCH.
- At least 2 years experience working in CCH including evidence of work in neurodevelopmental paediatrics, neurodisability, safeguarding, looked‑after children, special schools and community clinic.
- Training and experience in the identification and management of suspected child abuse and neglect.
- Experience of multi‑agency working within safeguarding and substantial experience of the legislation relating to children and young people and the court process.
- Experience of working with vulnerable children and young people and families and children in challenging situations.
- Experience or training in one or more of the following areas: safeguarding, children in care services, EHCP work, neuro‑disability, public health.
- Experience of holding named doctor for safeguarding or children in care role.
- Level 4 safeguarding certification.
- Valid EPALS and NLS training.
Qualifications
- Full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.
- Please confirm your GMC registration number.
- Eligible to be included on the specialist register – CCT expected within 6 months of interview date or.
- Evidence of CESR application submission and within 6 months of obtaining specialist registration via CESR.
- MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification.
- Grid training in Community Paediatrics.
- MSc/Diploma in Community Child Health or relevant subject.
Education and Teaching
- Experience and interest in teaching.
- Experience in formal and informal teaching to a variety of grades of professional (under‑post graduate, medical nursing and allied health professional).
- Experience in supervising trainees.
- An understanding of up‑to‑date changes/issues in medical education and training.
