Overview
Reporting to the Library and Archive Service Manager, this senior role leads the management and development of Portsmouth’s archive collections, including Portsmouth History Centre and Southsea Archive Repository. You will ensure the effective preservation, governance and accessibility of the city’s archives in line with national standards, legislation and council policies, while delivering the Portsmouth History Centre mission to inspire engagement with the city’s heritage locally, nationally and internationally.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a skilled team of archive staff and apprentices; oversee collection care and accreditation; represent the service internally and externally.
- Enable public access, support research, develop digital services, secure funding, and promote Portsmouth’s archive heritage through partnerships, events and outreach.
- Contribute to service planning, performance reporting and continuous improvement; work flexibly to meet the needs of the service.
Person specification / Qualifications
- Experience in the management, supervision and development of staff; a recognised professional qualification and experience in archive management.
- Understanding of engaging local communities with the service; experience of contributing to and delivering learning and access across programmes.
- Good communication, planning, reporting and funding application skills; experience of managing and delivering projects.
- Flexible working hours (evenings and weekends) and familiarity with principles and practice of digital preservation.
