About the role
Due to the upcoming recategorisation of HMP Brixton to a Category B Remand Prison, we have an exciting opportunity for a General Practitioner to join our Primary Care team. The site is close to Brixton underground station with good transport access. This role will specifically involve working within receptions, with the new intake of patients on Saturdays. During reception time we offer a nurse‑led service; GPs will be involved in same‑day medications, leavers medication, acute health needs and substance‑misuse detox and prescribing.
Hours and Working Conditions
Saturday 8 am – 4 pm. Part‑time, 8 hours per week.
Salary
Annual salary up to £129,500 FTE, depending on experience.

Candidate requirements

Main duties of the job
As a GP you will deliver first‑class healthcare to a diverse group of patients and contribute to the overall health service of the prison. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Deliver first‑class healthcare and further develop your knowledge in areas you would not usually experience in practice or A&E environments.
- Provide clinical assessment, diagnosis, and decision‑making regarding future management of patients.
- Act as a highly specialised resource for other healthcare team members on site.
- Have active involvement in clinical governance and effectiveness activities.
Responsibilities
- Respond to medical problems presented by patients, including diagnosis, investigation, treatment and referral inline with guidelines and pathways.
- Prescribe for patients, regularly review medications and monitor repeat prescriptions.
- Provide medical leadership and expert advice regarding medical and primary care issues to the wider healthcare team.
- Deliver effective patient care, developing high levels of communication with patients and identifying evidence‑based best practice.
- Conduct appropriate clinical audit to improve clinical outcomes.
- Inspire and develop positive, collaborative working relationships across the multidisciplinary team.
- Promote multidisciplinary discussions around complex case management, ensuring systems and processes are in place for managing results, letters and tasks.
- Undertake clinical risk assessments and implement management strategies for risks.
- Share and disseminate acquired knowledge with all team members through development sessions and clinical governance meetings.
Qualifications
- MBChB or MBBS.
- Inclusion on the GMC Register and GP Performers List.
- Evidence of engagement with annual appraisal.
- Experience working as a GP in community general practice.
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
- Ability to work with patients with a history of substance misuse.
- RCGP Certificate in Substance Misuse Level 1 and Level 2, or willingness to undertake these qualifications.
