Overview

The post holder will support and help build GESH a shared purpose and vision for improvement. They will support the development, implementation and application of a group-wide improvement culture and quality management system, enabling the group to deliver its key strategic priorities and enhance the capability and capacity of staff. The role will focus on building long‑term improvement capability while delivering purposeful improvement to address current challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use specialist knowledge and proven experience in the management and supportive delivery of improvement programmes and projects within a highly complex healthcare setting.
  • Contribute to the GESH vision and shared purpose, ensuring it is lived everyday by staff and underpinned by core values.
  • Ensure all improvement work is aligned with the shared purpose and the current GESH and NHS priorities.
  • Create a powerful, purpose‑driven context and narrative for improvement work to encourage engagement based on commitment to purpose rather than mere compliance.
  • Understand the working environment of frontline staff, including their challenges, successes, and desired improvements, to guide the shared purpose.
  • Support innovative methods of co‑design, collaboration and engagement events.
  • Design, develop and implement a group‑wide system of working that sustains a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Support teams to improve safety, reduce unwarranted variation and adopt operational best practices through improvement skills.

St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group serve a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. The sites include St George’s Hospital – one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and teaching hospital in the area – St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children, and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). Since 2021, the two Trusts have operated as a hospitals group while remaining separate Trusts, enabling closer collaboration on research, education, training, and workforce development for the 17,000‑strong workforce.
