Department Summary:

The Department of Global Languages and Literatures is committed to helping students develop an in-depth understanding of foreign languages, literatures, linguistics, cultures and civilizations. Our students learn to express their ideas and views in a new language while discovering how another culture has contributed to societal development. They become engaged international citizens who enlist language skills and cultural knowledge to succeed in a variety of careers and intellectual disciplines in an increasingly globalized world. The successful candidate will join a collegial, dynamic department engaged in reimagining global language education in a fast-changing academic and technological landscape.

We invite applications for a full-time temporary faculty position in Spanish beginning Fall 2026, with the possibility of renewal. The candidate will become a specialist in Spanish for Professional Purposes and Translation/Interpretation, focusing on the ethical use of translation technologies in multilingual contexts. The teaching load is four courses per semester.

Fall 2026 Teaching Schedule

  • LASP 165 (Spanish for the Healthcare Professions) MW 1:50-3:05pm
  • LASP 272 (Introduction to Translation and Interpretation); pre‑req is Spanish 200 or consent of instructor or native or near‑native Spanish proficiency. MW 3:20pm-4:35pm
  • LANG 199 (Language, Power & Diversity) MWF 10:10am-11:00am
  • LANG 199 (Language, Power & Diversity) MWF 11:15am-12:05pm

Spring 2027 Teaching Schedule

  • LASP 151 (Spanish in Your Work I or Spanish in the Workplace I or Intermediate Spanish I)
  • LASP 200 (Spanish in Your Work II or Spanish in the Workplace II or Intermediate Spanish II)
  • LANG 199 (Topic of choice)
  • LANG 199 (Topic of choice)

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and teach intermediate-level courses in Spanish for Professional Purposes and Translation/Interpretation, incorporating emerging translation technologies such as AI while addressing their ethical, cultural, and linguistic implications.
  • Teach first- and second-year seminars conducted in English to introduce a broad student audience to themes such as linguistic diversity, intercultural communication, and the ethical use of translation technologies in multilingual and professional contexts.
  • Participate in university and departmental life including student advising and committees.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s in Spanish, Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies, or a closely related field.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • Experience teaching college-level Spanish.
  • Experience teaching in two or more of the following areas: Spanish for Professional Purposes; Spanish-English Translation and/or Interpretation; Translation technologies including the uses and ethical implications of AI; Project-based or experiential learning, critical digital literacy and intercultural competency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Spanish, Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies, or a closely related field (ABD considered with degree in hand by start date).
  • Proven track record in professional translation and interpretation.
  • Experience teaching Spanish courses that integrate industry-relevant translation technologies.
  • Experience teaching general education courses in English that bridge intercultural competencies with critical engagement in emerging translation technologies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving a diverse student body and implementing equitable teaching practices.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary collaborations, project-based learning, and/or community-engaged pedagogy.
