Infrastructure Engineer

The University of Northampton's Infrastructure Engineer supports and develops the IT infrastructure, working closely with colleagues across IT, the wider university, and third‑party suppliers. You will be part of the Systems team, helping maintain reliable, secure infrastructure services and continuously improve systems and processes in line with the university’s digital strategy.

This hands‑on role is in a fast‑paced educational environment, suitable for someone with technical foundations and a genuine interest in infrastructure technologies. The job provides 2nd and 3rd line support for infrastructure‑related incidents, service requests, and problems affecting both staff and students. It involves delivering business‑as‑usual activities alongside project work as assigned by senior engineers and the team manager.

Working hours are 37 hours per week with occasional on‑call rota, rotated around the team with some out‑of‑hour requirements.

Responsibilities

• Deploy, configure, monitor, and support servers and associated infrastructure systems while ensuring all environments meet operational policies, standards, and best‑practice guidelines.
• Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date technical documentation, including system configurations and processes.
• Provide infrastructure support across campus locations and remote sites.
• Manage and support hardware, software, inventory, printing services, and monitoring tools.
• Collaborate with third‑party suppliers to ensure equipment and services are delivered and ready on time.
• Work with end users in a clear, customer‑focused, and non‑technical manner.

You need knowledge and experience in at least four of the following technologies:

• Active Directory & Group Policy 2019/2022/2025
• Exchange 365 Online
• IT end‑user devices
• Microsoft end‑user applications
• Office 365 Environment
• Hyper‑Converged Infrastructures (Storage Spaces)
• Virtual infrastructures VMWare, Hyper V, Nutanix
• File storage, backup and data recovery techniques
• Service monitoring (Logic Monitor) and similar tools
• Identity Management (IDM)
• MS Certificate Services
• Azure / AWS and Azure MFA security configuration
• PowerShell scripting
• Understanding of the printing process
• Knowledge of AI Technologies

Essential qualifications

• Relevant professional IT qualification or Bachelors / Advanced Degree or equivalent experience.
• Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable qualifications

• ITIL Foundation certification.
