Job Summary
The Senior Engineer in Electrical/Mechanical Systems Engineering will join the Defence – Systems Engineering & Technology team at GKN Aerospace. You will help shape the future of flight by developing, integrating, implementing, and verifying technical solutions and compliance documentation for a four‑year Avionics technology development project with customer Tilt‑Rotors. The role will be based at our GKN facilities in Cowes, Isle of Wight, with alternative appointments at the Global Technology Centre in Bristol or the manufacturing facility in Luton, requiring visits to Cowes as needed. The project requires flexible international travel within Europe and to the U.S. (approximately every two months) and offers hybrid working – up to two days per week from home. Relocation support will be provided to the Isle of Wight if the position is not located there.

Job Accountabilities
- Quality assurance review of design deliverables produced by the Defence – Systems Engineering team
- Data analysis and reporting for qualification arguments and GKN Defence avionic, control systems, and sub‑systems submissions
- Release of stakeholder and internal technical communications
- Technical work breakdown of program planning objectives
- Ensure best‑practice development within systems engineering excellence
- Mentor and develop systems engineering team members
- Provide systems engineering input to the technology incubator process
What You'll Bring
Specific Technical Experience
- HNC, degree or equivalent experience in electrical, mechanical or systems engineering
- Demonstrable lead‑engineering experience delivering electro‑mechanical, sensing or controller systems
- Design and delivery of high‑quality, reliable systems in a complex regulatory environment (e.g., MIL‑STD, TUV certification)
- Track record (minimum one project) in compliance planning and verification & validation analysis for product release
- Advanced experience with the Systems Development Lifecycle process
- Intermediate experience with requirement decomposition and tools such as DOORS
- Advanced experience developing system control functions and logic models
- Ability to design and set‑up experiments and fixtures for testing
- Confidence interrogating CAD models and drawings (e.g., CATIA V5)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications
- Technical leadership – ability to mentor and develop functional team members
- Confidence presenting technical information to senior stakeholders and internal customers
- Commitment to the Plan‑Do‑Check‑Act mindset and continuous improvement
- Hands‑on approach – a genuine desire to be close to the components and people that build our systems
- Experience in safety assessment with FTA and FMEA tools (e.g., ANSYS Medini, Isograph)
- Proficiency in multi‑domain modelling/simulation packages such as MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, Amesim
