Our client, a leading player in the Defence & Security sector, is currently seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team on a contract basis. The role involves collaborating with functional teams to develop products that meet customer requirements and engaging in cutting‑edge research of novel mechanical technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out Mechanical Design and proving activities as part of a wider team for prime and variant products, including both piece parts and assemblies.
  • Support and liaise with manufacturing teams to resolve manufacturing problems and defects.
  • Provide support for functional and environmental testing and trials.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and purchasing departments to resolve technical queries.
  • Plan and report on day‑to‑day activities to meet project milestones.
  • Gain and clarify requirements, and challenge extraneous requirements to reduce lead time, costs, and design complexity.

Job Requirements

  • Experience using Creo 3D design tool.
  • Knowledge of several of the following:
    • Manufacturing processes
    • Tolerance studies
    • Environmental test
    • Mass property calculations
    • Material selection
    • FMEA
    • Design for Manufacture/Assembly
    • Environmental gasket sealing
    • Tooling/fixtures design
    • Structural design
    • Defence Standards
    • Review processes
    • Product lifecycles
    • Industrial validation
    • Ability to work as part of a multifunctional engineering team and participate in or host design reviews.
    • An appreciation of other engineering areas/domains

Other Details

  • Location: Bristol or Stevenage
  • Security Clearance: SC; potential BPSS start
  • Contract Length: 6 months with possible extension
  • Work Schedule: 4 days a week on site; 1 day remote, with flexible start/finish times
  • UK travel: Rare
  • Educational Background: Degree, HND/HNC beneficial but not mandatory
  • Industry Experience: Preferably Defence/Aerospace, but open to other relevant sectors such as Automotive and Oil & Gas
