Senior Payroll Officer

Location: Cranleigh

Salary: £33,659 – £37,257 per annum, plus £1,000 retention bonus

Vacancy Type: 37.5 hours a week, 52 weeks a year

We are looking for an experienced in‑house payroll officer to ensure accurate remuneration for our staff and support for vulnerable children and young people.

Applicants should have previously worked in an in‑house payroll position with a minimum of 200 employees, preferably in a supervisory role, and hold appropriate payroll certification (CIPP level 4, with potential to progress to level 5). Significant experience at a similar level or equivalent certificates in HR Payroll or accountancy (AAT/ACCA) will also be considered.

Requirements include expert knowledge of UK payroll legislation and tax regulations, proficiency in payroll and HR software, strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills, excellent communication abilities, and strong analytical skills for reconciling data with the finance team.

Responsibilities

  • HR designated responsibilities
  • Direct staff communication
  • Payroll monthly input process and reconciling procedures
  • Payroll monthly reporting submissions for approval by HR, then BACS finance payment approval
  • Pensions administration
  • Exception reporting/data analytics preparation

Work Hours

Office based. Hours during term time: 8:30am – 4:30pm each day, with a half‑hour unpaid break each day. Some flexibility is possible during school holidays.

Qualifications

  • Previous in-house payroll position with a minimum of 200 employees
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • CIPP level 4 (potential progression to level 5)
  • Payroll certification or equivalent in HR Payroll/accountancy (AAT/ACCA)
  • Expert knowledge of UK payroll legislation and tax regulations
  • Proficiency in payroll and HR software
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills
  • Excellent communication, patience and empathy
  • Strong analytical skills for manual calculations and reconciling data
