About the Role
The Senior HVAC Engineer will lead the design, integration, and technical assurance of numerous HVAC systems across a complex marine platform. The role involves applying deep expertise in system performance, capacity assessment, and optimisation to deliver robust, compliant, and customer‑focused solutions throughout the shipbuilding lifecycle. The Senior HVAC Engineer ensures high engineering standards by driving improvements to processes, supporting technical investigations, and providing evidence‑based decision making. Strong HVAC and marine/building services systems experience is essential to ensuring system reliability and capability across the platform.
Contract & Working Conditions
12‑Month Contract
£40.64 per hour (umbrella, inside IR35)
Hybrid Working – 1–2 days per week on site
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare specifications and develop HVAC system designs in accordance with project requirements, technical standards, and quality expectations, including heat‑load calculations, psychrometrics, pressure‑drop calculations, and single‑line diagrams.
- Carry out design appraisals to ensure compliance with all applicable standards and design criteria.
- Participate in the development, maintenance, and modification of engineering processes and procedures related to HVAC distribution systems, ensuring alignment with technical developments, regulatory requirements, and operational needs.
- Conduct specialist technical analyses and investigations – e.g., noise and pressure‑loss calculations, ductwork optimisation, equipment performance assessments, root‑cause analysis for system faults – and prepare detailed technical reports with recommendations for problem resolution, system improvement, and HVAC capability enhancement.
- Act as a specialist point of contact for customers and/or suppliers on HVAC engineering matters, resolving technical issues, coordinating design intent, reviewing supplier data, and maintaining clear communication of priorities, performance requirements, and objectives.
- Provide guidance, mentoring, and technical direction to less‑experienced team members, supporting effective task delivery and professional growth.
Knowledge & Experience
- Experience in engineering or a defence‑related industry.
- Experience spanning typically two phases of the product lifecycle in the defence/maritime industry.
- Comprehensive understanding of adjacent phases and life‑cycle engineering issues.
- Knowledge of processes and tools used in marine engineering.
- Experience in supplier management.
- Experience writing technical specifications.
Skills Required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, and Foran.
- Expertise in marine HVAC systems or building services HVAC system design.
- Experience in the design, build, integration, support, and operation of naval ships (desirable).
- Awareness of life‑cycle management reviews of bids and programmes.
- Awareness of external market and industry advancements and developments.
Qualifications
- Degree qualified in engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Fit the requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer with the Engineering Council and be a member of a relevant professional body.
