An Opportunity has arisen within the Gas Control Centre for a Network Control Engineer reporting to the Gas Control Manager (Operations), within the Network Directorate based at Horley. As a Network Control Engineer, you will be responsible for the real time control and integrity of a local distribution zone with the SGN Distribution Network ensuring system safety and security are always maintained through the effective management of available assets. This includes providing a response to any Local and National Gas Supply Emergencies on a 365 days per year, 24 hours per day basis following a 'Forward Continental Shift Rota pattern'.
How you will contribute
- Champion a culture of safety, ensuring all activities within the Gas Control Centre meet SGN’s highest operational and service standards.
- Ensure daily system monitoring and control, alarm management, incident response, and escalation procedures.
- Interact with SGN Operational staff and external agencies daily.
- Forecast gas demand to meet both safety and commercial requirements.
- Calculate and manage offtake flows and send flow notifications within commercial and physical limits.
- Perform continual review of operating strategies to ensure safety and process improvement.
- Ensure specified target pressures and linepack stocks are met, through the operation of offtakes at minimum cost.
What you will need
- Analytical approach with an understanding and knowledge of the UK Gas Industry. Commitment to safety and standards of service is key. Understanding of IT systems and applications, specifically SCADA would be advantageous.
- Initiative to work within tight timescales and take accurate decisions whilst maintaining high performance, all without direct referral to your manager.
- Good organisational, diagnostic and problem-solving skills with the ability to forecast demand, manage physical plant to ensure the distribution systems balance is maintained and authorise the start of complex and special operations.
- Good team worker able to communicate effectively with employees and customers at all levels, both within and outside of the Gas Control Team.
- Proven experience of ensuring accurate, consistent, and timely recording of operational information, logs, and communications across different applications.
- Ability to demonstrate flexibility as the work within Gas Control is varied. Must communicate effectively and politely, both verbally and in writing with colleagues, managers and customers within SGN and other external parties. Detail oriented, thorough approach and ‘can-do’ attitude with self-motivation to work independently to achieve required outcomes.

- To meet our BCM requirements, candidates must live within one hour travel distance from our offices in Horley.
- A full valid driving licence is required as you may be required to travel to our BCM site under your own means at short notice and in accordance with the BCM plan.
