Associate Engineer – Design Team, Kier
Job Overview
We are looking for an Associate Engineer to join our Design team based in London (SE1). The role will be part of a 100‑strong Construction Engineering capability that spans civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering. You will work on complex construction engineering services, including temporary works, traffic management solutions, and ground engineering.
Location & Hours
London, SE1 – 40 hours per week with some flexibility on hours.
Responsibilities
- Agree on technical requirements of the client remit and ensure full understanding.
- Question and challenge requirements where necessary.
- Lead the development of fee proposals in accordance with delegated authority policy.
- Organise and lead day‑to‑day workload of engineers and technical staff within the design team.
- Ensure technical compliance of designs to the remit, legal requirements, and company policies, including CDM Regulations, SHEMS, and QMS.
- Oversee and contribute to the production of design deliverables such as calculations, drawings, reports, and risk assessments.
- Identify and assess technical opportunities for value engineering and implement them with suitable approval.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, design and site teams to support contractual obligations and exceed expectations.
- Represent Kier Design at project and progress meetings with clients from remit development through lessons learned.
- Manage the financial and commercial aspects of the project with support from Engineering Manager and Commercial Manager.
- Monitor progress against agreed programme and budget and report on the project’s delivery status.
- Provide leadership to direct and indirect reports, including performance reviews, workload management, and staff time‑sheet approvals.
- Promote best practice within Kier Design and foster a culture of excellence.
- Act as an ambassador for Kier Design and uphold the company’s values.
- Stay current with design developments in safety, innovation, sustainability, diversity, and implement them appropriately.
- Maintain professional development, CPD, and professional body membership.
- Assist in developing all staff within Kier Design and promoting the engineering profession.
- Carry out supervisory duties for a Civil Engineer or equivalent role, including reviewing engineering methods, software, and templates to increase quality and efficiency.
- Support business development by marketing Kier Design competencies to generate new or repeat business.
Qualifications
- Chartered member of a relevant professional institution (e.g., CEng, MICE).
- Practical industry experience in a similar role with significant responsibility.
- Proven experience of designing temporary works.
