Role Description
CoStar is seeking a senior-level attorney to serve in the role of Senior Commercial Counsel, Europe. This is a great opportunity for a senior commercial lawyer to be a key contributor to the growth of the business across Europe, and beyond. The position will be a leader on commercial law matters, and report directly to the Associate General Counsel – Head of Legal, Europe (based in London). You will provide commercial contracts and other general commercial, product, and legal advice across CoStar’s leading products, including CoStar (database of real estate information), Loopnet, OnTheMarket and Matterport.
Location
The position is based in CoStar’s European head office, Blue Fin Building on the Southbank (beside the Tate Modern), London. The successful candidate will work primarily with teams based in the UK, France, Germany and Spain but also globally where required.
Responsibilities
- Be the lead legal point of contact and trusted business partner to the European sales teams and other key business stakeholders.
- Provide strategic legal advice regarding all aspects of the contracting life cycle, and run legal negotiations end-to-end.
- Advise on legislative changes and suitable implementation of new processes across the business to comply with such changes.
- Build close cross‑functional relationships with stakeholders of all levels in supported business operations and maintain a solid knowledge of the products, services and objectives.
- Draft and negotiate a variety of domestic and international commercial agreements, including licensing, SaaS, manufacturing, supply, consulting, marketing and other sales and operational agreements.
- Build and maintain templates and processes for jurisdiction specific commercial contracting.
- Maintain and manage notices, policies and other related documents.
- Develop initial strategy for responding to contractual legal claims and threats of litigation, including assisting with fact development in pre‑litigation and/or litigation matters.
- Manage and collaborate with external counsel in multiple jurisdictions, including negotiation of fees and monitoring of spend against budgets.
- Work collaboratively with peers in the wider global legal team to create global process efficiencies.
Qualifications
- England and Wales qualified solicitor (or equivalent European jurisdiction qualification).
- Degree from reputable University or UK law school with excellent academics.
- More than 5 years PQE, including 2 years at a top law firm; in‑house experience preferred.
- Experience working across multiple jurisdictions, including UK, US, France, Germany, and Spain.
- Fluent or advanced level in French, German and/or Spanish.
- Experience negotiating contract terms on data privacy and protection of intellectual property rights.
- Ability to provide pragmatic and risk‑based advice to the business.
- Experience working for a US‑headquartered and/or publicly listed business.
- Be extremely organized, detail‑oriented and efficient with strong follow‑through on accountability.
- Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, with flexibility to adapt to frequently changing workload.
- Thrive in new and potentially uncomfortable situations and manage multiple client demands.
