The post holder will bridge the gap between clinical practice and facilities management, using their clinical expertise to drive sustainable resource management, reduce waste, and ensure regulatory compliance.
Primary to the role will be taking time to work alongside clinical colleagues, observe opportunities to minimise waste, improve compliance and sustainability.
The role also involves the oversight of the Premises Assurance Model, where you will work with Compliance managers to oversee the planned improvements of Estates and Facilities services.
Main duties of the job
The role will lead on the Trust's operational management of waste compliance and Premises Assurance Model (PAM) requirements. As a registered nurse, the post holder will maintain clinical currency by spending dedicated time in clinical areas, allowing them to identify practical, clinically‑safe sustainability initiatives from the ward floor.
Job responsibilities
- Waste Management & Compliance: Act as the Trusts management and compliance lead for waste. Ensure the separation, storage, and disposal of all waste streams (clinical, infectious, offensive, recyclable, domestic) comply with HTM 07-01, Environmental Protection Act, and Duty of Care regulations. Conduct regular audits of waste practices in all departments. The role is required to improve the Trusts position in relation to waste hierarchy as detailed through the NHS Clinical Waste Strategy.
- Premises Assurance Model (PAM): Co‑coordinate the collection of evidence and data for PAM return. Compile the annual report and action plan in readiness for presentation. Oversee progress of the action plan for reporting and escalation as required.
- Clinical Engagement & Education: Utilise clinical credibility to engage nursing and medical staff. Develop and deliver training packages on waste segregation, safe sharps disposal, and resource efficiency, translating complex policy into practical, ward and theatre based action. Work with Practice Development Nurse team to make real credible change.
- Sustainability Initiatives: Identify and implement cost‑saving and carbon‑reducing initiatives by observing clinical workflows (e.g., minimising packaging, reducing single‑use items, optimising linen utilisation, improving recycling rates and promoting standardisation in theatres and wards).
- Clinical Practice (PIN Retention): To maintain professional, undertaking supervised clinical duties. This ensures sustainability projects are grounded in the reality of patient care.
- Audit & Reporting: Collect and analyse data on waste volumes and costs. Produce reports for presentation at appropriate groups for carbon reduction and productive resource measures, highlighting areas of non‑compliance and financial savings. Assist in the preparation of reports for meetings and committees. Audit the outcome of change for continuous improvement.
- Policy & Procedure Development: Review and update Trust policies on waste management and support Trust policy owners, where reference is required to waste, including cleanliness and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team. Ensure a collaborative approach is taken through attendance at appropriate groups.
- Liaison: Act as the key point of contact for internal ward staff and external waste contractors, resolving operational issues such as missed collections or segregation errors.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (Adult) with current valid registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- Evidence of continued professional development
- Willingness to undertake training in waste management, HTM 07-01, and PAM frameworks
Experience
- Significant post‑registration experience working in an acute clinical environment (e.g., ward, theatre, or department)
- Experience of leading change or quality improvement projects in a clinical setting
- Understanding of the operational challenges faced by ward staff regarding supplies and waste
- Experience of auditing clinical practice against standards
Skills
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing deadlines
- Willingness to undertake courses that strengthen competency
Knowledge
- Understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
- An understanding of audit
- Passion for sustainability – demonstrate a motivation to make positive change
