Granite Recruitment are currently working in partnership with a leading global design and engineering consultancy with a strong presence across the UK and international markets. As they continue to grow their power and energy team in Scotland, they are looking for an experienced Principal Protection & Control Design Engineer to join their Glasgow office and play a key role in shaping the delivery of their project portfolio.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Technical Director, you will act as the senior technical authority for protection and control design across their UK energy projects. You will lead the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions from initial feasibility and scoping through to detailed design, review, and commissioning support. Working across multiple concurrent assignments and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, you will ensure all work meets industry standards, client requirements, and best practice, while also mentoring junior engineers and contributing to the continuous improvement of their technical capability.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop comprehensive scoping documentation including design briefs, technical specifications, and scope of works, clearly defining project requirements, deliverables, and technical boundaries to ensure successful project delivery.
- Prepare accurate and well-structured Main Connections Diagrams and Protection & Control Schematics covering systems from 11kV up to 400kV, ensuring alignment with relevant standards, client philosophies, and project objectives.
- Independently review and validate Protection & Control designs produced by third parties - including contractors, suppliers, and other consultancies - identifying gaps, technical risks, or non-compliance, and providing clear, constructive feedback and recommendations for improvement.
- Specify all Protection & Control related equipment and plant, with particular expertise in the selection and specification of Current Transformers (CTs) and Voltage Transformers (VTs). In addition, you will specify numerical protection relays, control panels, auxiliary transformers, and associated components, ensuring technical suitability, interoperability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness for the intended operating environment.
- Produce detailed engineering designs including AC and DC schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and cable schedules, using industry-standard CAD software to ensure clarity, accuracy, and constructability.
- Conduct detailed protection grading and coordination studies, including fault level calculations, time‑current characteristic analysis, sensitivity checks, and selectivity verification; generate relay setting files and formal setting schedules ready for implementation, testing, and commissioning.
- Review Commissioning Plans and test procedures to ensure they are technically robust, safe, and aligned with design intent; attend Commissioning Panel meetings, lead technical discussions, resolve queries, and approve key project milestones.
- Lead the development of protection philosophies and design standards, supporting consistent, high‑quality delivery across all projects and ensuring alignment with evolving industry practice and regulatory requirements.
- Act as a trusted technical point of contact for clients, providing expert advice, presenting findings and design solutions clearly, and managing technical expectations throughout the project lifecycle.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers, technicians, and graduates, sharing your knowledge and experience to support their professional growth and technical development.
- Contribute to tender responses, technical proposals, and client presentations, using your expertise to help win new work and strengthen their reputation as a trusted technical partner.
Person Specification
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent), with a focus on power systems or electrical power engineering.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), or the ability to achieve this within 12 months of appointment.
- Experience in protection and control design within the UK power industry, with experience in a senior or principal‑level role documenting main connection diagrams, protection schematics, and detailed AC/DC designs for transmission and distribution assets.
