Admin Sister/Charge Nurse – Emergency Department
An exciting opportunity has become available to be part of the Emergency Department management team to work alongside the Matron to support and lead the nursing team within emergency care. The role includes auditing, governance, workforce planning/management and operational duties in the day to day running of this busy and diverse environment. Experience within urgent and emergency care is essential in order to support the teams to work within the trust values and provide high quality, safe care to our patients.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead by example as the expert practitioner providing organisation and leadership to the multi‑professional team
- Be responsible for care standards, appropriate use of staff and space and patient flow within the department ensuring excellent patient experience
- Undertake nursing management roles as appropriate
- Proactively monitor and manage Clinical Quality Indicators and Internal Professional Performance Standards (IPPS) ensuring escalation in line with Trust policy
- Ensure effective communication amongst the clinical team
- Foster close working relationships with all members of the multi‑disciplinary team
- Initiate and implement change in collaboration with clinical colleagues, ensuring care is evidence based
- Respond to patients, relatives and carers concerns as they arise and take remedial action as required
- Be familiar with Trust policies around performance discipline and grievance, and assist the Matron where appropriate
- Influence and empower through motivating and supporting junior staff
- Utilise the skills of the nursing and medical team, ensuring that provision of skill mix is in place to maintain patient and staff safety
- Ensure effective use of resources, including equipment maintenance and storage
- Play a lead role in staff meetings and disseminating information to others
- Lead team of nurses taking responsibility for appraisal, development plans and performance monitoring
- Provide supervision to staff and constructive feedback on clinical competence
- Review off duty to guarantee appropriate skill mix for safe delivery of care and ensure deficits are resolved in advance
Qualifications
- Experience of leading a clinical team and managing in an autonomous manner
- Experience in delivering high quality evidence based emergency care
- Able to make sound clinical decisions and give expert opinions on nursing care based on current evidence based practice
- Demonstrate knowledge of research and audit
- Demonstrates knowledge of emergency department national standards/Quality clinical indicators/IPPS
- Ability to organise and prioritise own work and that of the ED team
- Well developed influencing and negotiation skills
- Demonstrates understanding and ability in conducting appraisal and PDP
- Demonstrates understanding of sickness and absence management in line with the Trust policy
- Previous participation in the recruitment process
Experience
- Knowledge of current developments in Emergency Care
- Sound knowledge of current evidence based clinical practice
- Effective communication skills in stressful situations
- Able to motivate and develop others
- Ability to defuse volatile situations
- Can identify audit process and undertake where appropriate
