Overview
This exciting role sits within the Smart Buildings Team at the University of Bristol, an interdisciplinary group dedicated to improving the energy efficiency and environmental performance of our estate. You will lead the delivery of programmes that integrate Operational Technology, including Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, supporting key initiatives such as the Modern Network Programme.
Working closely with colleagues across Campus Division and IT Services, you will play a pivotal role in connecting strategy with delivery. You will help ensure our buildings are efficient, sustainable, and future-ready, combining technical expertise, project leadership, and strong stakeholder engagement to drive meaningful, long-term improvements.
What will you be doing?
In this role, you will design and deliver innovative Operational Technology solutions, developing robust business cases and leading projects from concept through to successful implementation. You will play a key role in integrating systems such as Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, while managing external contractors and acting as a technical lead for new installations.
You will be responsible for diagnosing faults, driving continuous system optimisation, and producing insightful reports to inform decision-making and support positive behavioural change. Working collaboratively with stakeholders across the University, you will ensure solutions deliver against operational, financial, and environmental objectives, contributing to the ongoing improvement of building performance.

We are looking for candidates with a strong technical understanding of building services and hands-on experience of Operational Technology systems, such as Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) (e.g. Trend or Niagara).
You should hold a relevant engineering qualification (HND or equivalent) or bring significant industry experience. Strong communication and stakeholder management skills are essential, along with experience in developing business cases.
Knowledge of networking protocols such as BACnet and Modbus would be advantageous. You will be self-motivated, well-organised, and comfortable managing multiple priorities, with a proven ability to develop innovative solutions and drive positive operational and behavioural change.
