Role Overview
The main purpose of the role is to process intelligence reports, employ effective decision making by interpreting and applying local guidelines and national practice in accordance with APP (Authorised Professional Practice). It also involves overseeing and coordinating on‑going learning support to those engaged in submitting and processing intelligence.
Main Responsibilities
- Effectively assess and evaluate intelligence reports (including secure intelligence), incoming emails and requests, prioritise in accordance with approved professional practice (APP), provide grounds for rejecting or returning intelligence reports, and support decisions with a sound rationale.
- Identify threat, risk of harm and opportunity for interventions, and promptly escalates intelligence to the appropriate person for further action, which includes support to operations and live‑time operational activities.
- Interrogate a range of systems to aid decision making through effective research, including verifying and cross‑referencing validity of information to identify and communicate links between different pieces of information.
- Identify and disseminate intelligence and information in line with policing purpose and national standards, to support ongoing operations and aid achievement of forces policing objectives.
- Stay up‑to‑date with current intelligence strategies, including the process of sanitising, linking, flagging, ensuring quality of data, disseminating intelligence effectively, and embedding an appropriate security ethos in day‑to‑day processing and management of intelligence.
- Coach submitting officers and new‑in‑post intelligence support officers by identifying efficient and effective practice, supporting the learning of others, thereby improving intelligence outcomes.
- Adhere to all relevant legal frameworks, key working principles, policies and guidance including the Data Protection Act, Management of Police Information and National Decision Model.
- Collect, assimilate and present performance information, including quality assurance checks on intelligence processed.
- Undertake other duties commensurate with the nature, level of responsibility and grading of this post, as required.
Knowledge
- Educated to A level or equivalent.
- 5 A‑C Grade GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths and English.
- Broad understanding of the application of the National Intelligence Model (NIM).
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, policy, and guidelines (e.g. Intelligence, APP, Freedom of Information Act, MoPI, GDPR, DPA, ECHR).
- Knowledge of associated issues and risks to policing and other government agencies.
Experience
- Experience researching, interpreting and collating complex information with thorough attention to detail.
- Previous experience providing coaching and supportive feedback.
- Ability to prioritise and plan own work, manage time effectively to meet objectives and deadlines, and act on own judgement.
- Undertake College of Policing Intelligence Professionalisation Programme (IPP) Certification, to be completed within 12 months of appointment.
Key Skills
- Ability to analyse, assimilate and record complex information, interpret and apply legislation and policy, and make informed decisions.
- Good communication skills, including the ability to listen to others and transmit and receive information effectively.
- Ability to demonstrate and maintain high standards of discretion, integrity and confidentiality.
- Skilled in the use of standard IT packages, systems and/or databases to enter, record, and retrieve information effectively.
