The Role

Senior Design Engineer – REF: 2619

Position located at our Hemel Hempstead office.

We are looking for a senior engineer to join our Gas Transmission/Distribution Networks design team and potentially lead high‑value projects as their career progresses.

Responsibilities

  • Design lead and project coordination from conceptual design through project completion in the gas network sector, covering new build AGI and PRI, capacity upgrades, renewable gas (biogas, biomethane and hydrogen), TX/DX pipelines and diversions, and upgrade works across gas distribution networks.
  • Innovation and development projects in hydrogen and biomethane.
  • Discipline design lead within a design team (Mechanical, Civil, E&I, CP, drafting).
  • Design from first principles and produce design drawings, specifications, and preliminary, detailed and conceptual design reports.
  • Manage junior engineers, deliver projects, manage performance and develop competency.
  • Liaise with local authorities, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Hazardous Area Classification & ATEX assessments.
  • Participate in HAZID/HAZOP and LOPA studies.
  • Assume Principal Designer / CDM role.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree (Bachelor Honours or higher) in Mechanical, Process, or a similar discipline relevant to the specification above.
  • 7+ years post‑graduate and relevant design experience; CEng beneficial but not essential.
  • Experience in the gas industry.
  • Working understanding of IGEM standards.
  • Excellent computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Good academic record.
  • Full clean driving licence and own transport required.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
