Clinical Nurse Specialist - Complex Spine

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated experienced registered nurse to join the Complex Spinal Nursing Team and deliver great care to our patients. This post is an excellent opportunity to develop specialist nursing skills in the care of patients with complex spinal needs.
Our Complex Spine service provides comprehensive patient care from initial referral to discharge. The specialist nursing team works closely with complex spinal surgeons and other members of an expert multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will work autonomously and collaboratively within a detailed clinical governance framework. The team continually develops and reviews the service in line with evolving research and practice.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant must be passionate about this patient group, highly motivated and enthusiastic about teaching all grades of staff. The candidate must be an outstanding communicator, demonstrate first‑rate organisational and multitasking skills, and be able to prioritise effectively in a busy and fast‑paced work environment. The role involves supporting, training, developing and educating others as a member of the Complex Spinal Nursing team and contributing to the delivery of Trust objectives and service objectives in line with the Trust Vision and Values.

Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering patient care throughout the complex spine pathway
- Co‑ordinating multidisciplinary team meetings and care plans
- Leading and participating in clinical audits, evaluation and continuous improvement initiatives
- Providing education and training to staff and patients on complex spine management
- Acting as a clinical supervisor and mentor within the team
Knowledge and Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (Adult)
- Teaching/Assessment programme experience
- Honours Degree in Nursing, research or ethics
- Completed/completing Masters Degree
- Advanced communication skill course
Experience
- Minimum 3 years' relevant post‑registration experience in the same specialty at band 6
- Demonstrated up‑to‑date knowledge and expertise in the specialty
- Evidence of developing and leading nurse‑led clinics or services
- Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and autonomously
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of key professional issues and NMC guidelines relating to professional practice
- Able to respond appropriately to accidental or untoward clinical incidents
- Participation in and compliance with UCLH and Divisional clinical governance frameworks
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Previous experience of formal and informal teaching of patients and staff
- Skills in critical analysis and application of research to practice
- Experience in developing standards, guidelines and policies
- Experience in audit and evaluation of practice or services
- Experience in acting as a clinical supervisor and mentor
- Published articles or poster presentations
- Previous experience in budgetary management
Personal and People Development
- Commitment to maintaining own fitness for practice through maintaining a personal portfolio of competencies
- Experience as a preceptor, facilitator or mentor
- Reflective practice
- Evidence of ability to work both collaboratively and autonomously
Communication
- Keyboard and word processing skills
