R&D Tax – Science / Engineering Consultant
Location: Manchester/Scotland or Leeds
Join EY’s Rapidly growing Research & Development tax team in our Global Grants Credits & Incentives Group. Work alongside other STEM professionals, tax and accounting colleagues on a variety of UK clients ranging from owner‑managed businesses to multinational groups at the front line of cutting‑edge technology.
The Opportunity
As a Senior Science/Engineering Consultant you will work across diverse industries, lead client technical interviews, identify qualifying R&D projects, write and review reports, manage client communication, and support business development and cross‑sector claims.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate as an effective member of multidisciplinary teams, demonstrating strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Write and review compelling technical project reports that highlight key technical factors for R&D tax claims.
- Take a leading role in interactions with clients’ senior technical and engineering staff to assess R&D eligibility.
- Apply advanced problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills for project execution and delivery.
- Build and maintain client relationships to provide high levels of service.
- Deliver high‑quality advice and solutions to major clients, managing risk and reputation.
- Adapt and apply knowledge across sectors, building core capabilities.
Skills and Attributes for Success
- Strong interest in science, technology, and engineering challenges.
- Industry experience dealing with technological challenges—engineering design, experimental process, product development, or manufacturing improvements across sectors such as automotive, aerospace, civil, defence, food & drink, life sciences, electronics.
- Rapid learning and adaptation to new industry sectors with strong business acumen.
- Interpersonal skill to interact with technical professionals and produce concise information summaries.
- High attention to detail and commitment to first‑time accuracy.
- Understanding of project and company finances and tax treatment applications.
Qualifications
- Degree in science, technology, or engineering.
- Two or more years of industry experience in the relevant field.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills with a collaborative approach to management.
- Flexibility to learn and adapt in a fast‑paced environment.
Ideal Additional Experience
- Previous R&D tax experience (advantageous but not required).
