About the Role
You’ll work within DVLA’s IT Services (ITS) Directorate, collaborating across engineering squads, architects and technical leads, and business directorates.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the technical design of systems and services, justifying and communicating architectural decisions.
- Assure solution quality and align with DVLA, DfT and government‑wide strategies.
- Explore opportunities for cross‑government architectural alignment.
- Work collaboratively with engineering squads to transition new solutions into live operation.
- Set standards and provide architectural governance and assurance.
- Mentor and support architects and engineers across teams.
- Provide leadership to the wider architecture community.
- Line manage and develop colleagues.
Who this role is for
- Has operated as a technical or solution architect on enterprise‑scale systems.
- Confident owning architecture end‑to‑end, from design through delivery and assurance.
- Enjoys working with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Can influence and challenge senior leaders constructively.
- Likes balancing strategic vision with practical delivery realities.
Essential experience
- Infrastructure and cloud technologies.
- Unified communications and omni‑channel contact centre solutions.
- Networking concepts (LAN / WAN / WLAN).
- Microsoft Entra ID, O365, and hybrid Active Directory environments.
- Microsoft Azure Cloud Adoption Framework principles.
- Designing systems that protect sensitive data.
- Collaboratively creating and evolving solution designs.
- Providing technical leadership, governance and assurance across complex solutions.
You’ll bring excellent communication skills and be comfortable engaging with architects, engineers, testers, delivery managers and senior leaders alike.
