An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Cancer Information and Support Service Manager at UHB. You will contribute to the development and delivery of evidence-based cancer information.
The successful post holder will be required to manage and deliver a comprehensive cancer information and support service for people affected by cancer including patients, carers, family and friends, as well as health and social care professionals.
You will work collaboratively with site‑specific teams, community services, charitable organisations and trusted community partners to ensure information meets patient need and supports agreed local information strategies.
The successful candidate will be adaptable and flexible with proven management experience working both autonomously as well as part of a friendly and supportive team of staff.
Main duties of the job
You will be expected to plan, organise and oversee the day‑to‑day caseload of the service to meet service requirements, adjusting workloads to accommodate changing and complex needs. Whilst line‑managing a defined group of staff and volunteers.
Supporting recruitment, training, mentorship and coordination of service delivery and empowering staff to develop personally and professionally achieving their potential is fundamental.
Demonstrate advanced, empathetic communication skills when supporting patients and carers throughout the cancer pathway, including periods of distress, anxiety, diagnosis, recurrence and end‑of‑life care are crucial to this role.
Act as a credible and professional role model, delivering presentations and training sessions to staff, patients and service users to promote cancer information and personalised care. This requires strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships.

Qualifications
- Educated to degree level, or able to demonstrate equivalent professional experience within cancer information, support services, or a related field.
- Completion of a recognised, accredited communication skills programme (e.g., counselling training, certificated communication skills course, or Advanced Communication Skills Training).
- Demonstrable commitment to ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD), with evidence of maintaining and enhancing specialist knowledge relevant to cancer care, information provision, and service management.
- Registered healthcare professional (e.g., NMC or HCPC) or demonstrable equivalent experience within cancer information, personalised care or supportive services.
- Qualification in cancer care, palliative care, personalised care or a related subject.
- Leadership or management training.
Experience
- Good working knowledge of cancer pathways, including diagnosis, treatment options, survivorship and end‑of‑life care.
- Understanding of the information, support and personalised care needs of people affected by cancer.
- Knowledge of patient‑centred care and use of Holistic Needs Assessments (HNAs).
- Awareness of NHS structures, cancer policy and the role of voluntary and charitable organisations in cancer care.
- Understanding of confidentiality, information governance and relevant data protection legislation.
- Experience of working in cancer information, personalised care, supportive care or a related service.
- Experience of supporting or managing staff and/or volunteers.
- Experience of working with patients and carers in emotionally challenging situations.
- Experience of contributing to service development, audit or improvement activity.
- Experience of organising workload, activities or events to meet service needs.
- Experience of line management, supervision or appraisal.
- Experience of delivering training, teaching or presentations.
- Experience of working with service users to co‑produce services or events.
- Knowledge of personalised care policy and national cancer strategies.
- Understanding of service evaluation, audit and quality improvement processes.
- Experience of working collaboratively across professional, organisational and sector boundaries.
- Experience of working with charitable or externally funded services.
