Fixed Term Consultant Ophthalmologist w/ special interest in Glaucoma

Overview

This is a Fixed Term Consultant Ophthalmologist post designed to provide sub-specialist Glaucoma and Cataract services for patients of the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. The appointment is a pan‑trust appointment with duties based at Boston Pilgrim Hospital with the possibility of commitments at other sites. This is a replacement post, and the appointee will be required to devote substantially the whole of their time to the duties of the post. Applicants may elect to work whole time or part time; if part time, modification of the job content will be discussed with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Service context

The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust provides ophthalmic services to a population in excess of 750,000. The service is based in two main sites in Boston and Lincoln, with peripheral sites in Louth, Gainsborough (attached to the Lincoln site) and Grantham, Skegness and Spalding (attached to the Boston site) providing additional outpatient services. This post is currently based at Lincoln County Hospital, Lincoln with some duties in the peripheral sites attached. The Trust serves a population of 680,000.

Responsibilities

• Provide a comprehensive ophthalmic service including vitreoretinal and general ophthalmology care, with a focus on sub‑specialist Glaucoma and Cataract services.
• Deliver high‑volume cataract surgery and contribute to meeting the 18‑week wait target across the eye department.
• In conjunction with colleagues, help deliver and expand the current service and contribute to planning for service expansion.
• Carry out teaching duties as required and participate in the Postgraduate Medical Education program and in teaching ophthalmic trainee staff.
• Contribute to undergraduate teaching for students from Nottingham and Leicester Medical Schools; engage in the education of nursing staff and other clinical professions as appropriate.
• Regularly attend Clinical Audit and Departmental Team meetings; participate in the robust clinical audit program and take part in regional and national audits.
• Report all critical incidents and attend and support Departmental audit and Clinical Governance meetings.
• Offer both vitreoretinal and general ophthalmology services, ensuring the trust meets its contractual obligations with respect to the 18‑week wait.
• Play an active role in the development and delivery of services and help formulate plans for expansion.

Appointment details

The appointee will be expected, in conjunction with colleagues, to provide a comprehensive ophthalmic service supporting a countywide service and to contribute to achieving the 18‑week wait across the department. The post involves teaching and clinical governance responsibilities, and the appointee will be expected to participate in the department’s audit program and regional/national audits.

The post is a fixed‑term consultant appointment based at Lincoln County Hospital with possible commitments at peripheral sites. The post has been developed to assist in delivery and expansion of the service and to cope with increasing demands in medical retina. The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust was formed on 1 April 2000 by merging several NHS trusts.
