Principal Electrical Engineer – Glasgow or Edinburgh

Hoare Lea offers sustainable engineering solutions. We seek a Principal Electrical Engineer to deliver high‑quality electrical engineering solutions across projects in Scotland and the UK.

About the Role

You will be based in either Glasgow or Edinburgh, leading design delivery on significant and complex building services projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design delivery for significant and complex schemes, ensuring technical quality.
  • Define and agree design brief with clients and manage client and consultant relationships.
  • Represent Hoare Lea at project meetings and promote services to support future business.
  • Manage, prioritise and motivate the internal project team, including specialist groups.
  • Delegate, review and check work undertaken by others; support professional development of team members.
  • Monitor project expenditure, costs and resource requirements; report regularly to the team leader.
  • Identify, highlight and manage project and commercial risks, including consultant appointment conditions and procurement impacts.
  • Ensure deliverables meet quality standards, technical accuracy and programme deadlines.
  • Share technical knowledge across the business and collaborate with other professionals.
  • Communicate openly and effectively at all levels internally and externally.

Qualifications

  • Qualified and recognized in the industry, preferably Chartered status.
  • In‑depth technical knowledge of electrical/building services design and relevant regulations and guides.
  • Strong understanding of complementary disciplines and experience leading integrated design teams.
  • Excellent client‑facing skills; ability to manage difficult situations calmly.
  • Demonstrated experience leading design teams on complex projects to demanding timescales.
  • Commercial awareness: monitoring costs, identifying risks and contributing to profitable delivery.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills, able to prioritise multiple demands.
  • Confident communicator – excellent written and spoken English.
  • IT literate with proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Dialux, OM Electrical.
  • Committed to continuous professional development and supporting the growth of others.
