We are seeking an experienced Controller to join our growing organization and lead the development and oversight of the accounting function. This is a hands‑on leadership role responsible for establishing accounting processes, improving procedures, and ensuring accurate financial reporting. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in the construction industry, including knowledge of work‑in‑progress (WIP) schedules and construction revenue recognition.
This position will play a key role in building and refining the accounting infrastructure while supporting operational leadership with timely and accurate financial insights.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish, document, and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Oversee all day‑to‑day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and month‑end close
- Prepare and review Work‑in‑Progress (WIP) schedules and ensure accurate project cost tracking
- Manage construction‑related revenue recognition in accordance with applicable accounting standards
- Produce timely and accurate financial statements and management reports
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis activities
- Coordinate with leadership to improve financial processes and reporting accuracy
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and internal policies
- Assist with audits and provide required documentation to external partners
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency within accounting workflows and reporting processes
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably within the construction or industrial services industry
- Strong experience with WIP schedules and construction revenue recognition
- Experience establishing accounting processes and internal controls in a growing organization
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
- Proven ability to work independently in a hands‑on environment
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- This position is on‑site in Portsmouth, VA, particularly during the initial phase while processes and procedures are being established. Hybrid flexibility may be considered in the future based on operational needs.
